YesAsia Editorial Description
One person's love is another's loneliness. Hong Kong indie filmmaker Pierre Lam spins a yarn about young love in this feverish metropolitan romance starring newcomers Wylie Chiu and Brian Li and James Ho (See You in You Tube) of pop group Square. Is love a sudden phone call, a chance ping pong match, an antique armchair that holds a new story? Through three episodes of unrequited yearning, weeping heartbreak, and hopeful beginning, the film whimsically traverses the laughter and tears of modern relationships with youthful abandon and moody musing.
Brian (Brian Li) is in love with his cute friend Wylie (Wylie Chiu), but she's utterly oblivious to his admiration. When her pseudo-relationship with a stylist turns to heartbreak, Brian offers her a shoulder to cry on, and wonders if his chance has come. In that same night, however, Wylie has already met someone new.

Love is in the Hair!
|
Although not the steamy affair you might expect by the title, this is quite light and enjoyable. I certainly couldn’t take my eyes off Wylie Chiu here, due to her looking so uncannily like Charlene Choi. It quite mesmerized me. If you didn’t know this was Wylie here, at certain angles you’d be convinced it was CC! Wylie as similar child like coquettish, tomboy innocence like Charlene. So if you’re a Twins fan, certainly see what you think of Wylie here! Brian Li is also quite funny, trying to cut his annoying kiss curl hair and constantly getting into hazards with a hairdresser and ping pong ball player (well played by Jason Yip) amidst his true perseverance and steadfast love for Wylie. Plot wise its all rather ridiculous, but endearing. Played out in three segments it’s all about Brian and Wylie’s (actor names are characters, too) independent feelings towards one other. Brian loves Wylie, but Wylie loves her hairdresser, so much that her long tresses have been reduced to a short bob. With the temperature at 90 degrees (basically the main hot part of the film), both reflect back their concerns in the three-segmented flashbacks. Firstly is Wylie’s hairdresser beau Ben who Wylie had become smitten with after a few shampoo sessions. But Ben had dared to wash another girl’s hair (who Wylie had introduced to Ben due to him only having Wylie as his one customer) and feels she’s been two-timed by Ben’s intimate shampoo sessions with this other girl. Brian consoles Wylie by simply concluding that she should forget about Ben. Of course he would as Brian’s tried to hint his love for Wylie for years and doesn’t want Ben in the picture. Brian though ends having a problem of his own. Ben’s hair stylist colleague Kim, as his ping-pong ball dented by Brian’s bike wheel and both end up playing, well, ping pong ball together to ease Kim’s upset about his dented ball. But Brian doesn’t realise that Kim is interested in Brian more than a ping-pong game. All this and Wylie’s encounter with a young man on a leather couch and his similar love problems makes for a full house of problematic love issues. This is funny in a somewhat droll way and even plays out like a lazy hot summer day. It’s a kooky, surreal and oddball ‘love in the air’ tale where wooing is played out as pastiche and playful banter. But by the finish I think you’ll find this an enjoyable romance comedy. I’ll bet sure many will love Wylie here. Don’t expect big guns or a mega plot, but just relax and enjoy. |
