　　本片改編自一部揭露三十年代愛爾蘭一間男童院陰暗面的自傳。男主角剛打完西班牙內戰回國，滿有理想，相信詩歌可改變人心。他在男童院當教師，即跟暴戾成性的院長神父發生衝突。這些每因小過而被關進來的少年，在院長眼中只是畜牲，整個教會和國家卻對神父的暴力和性侵犯視而不見。導演極重細節，正邪交鋒逐步升級，加上兩主角和多位少年的細緻演技，使影片透出逼人劇力。

　　This is the story of a non-clergy teacher, William Franklin, who is hired at a Catholic reformatory school near a small village in Ireland in 1939 shortly after his fighting in the Spanish Civil War. William tries to bring literacy and a love of the written word into the lives of the young boys who are his students, yet he finds himself clashing with the violent (and/or sexually deviant) monks who rule over the students with steel hands, forcing them to live by arbitrary rules.
