YesAsia Editorial Description
In spite of the departure of INORAN who is heading for a busy solo live tour this summer, Ken Lloyd keeps J-pop's FAKE? alive. The vocalist that was born in England has lots of high-caliber guests on his latest release called SONGS FROM BEELZEBUB. Teaming up with the likes of D-Kiku, Eric Zay, former SBK member Shigeo, Shibuya Ken as well as ex-Smiths' vocalist MORRISSEY, FAKE? seems to be headed for a fresh energetic new start.

The Next Frontier...

The Next Frontier On The Dance Floor? Maybe the whole point of this album was to challenge the conventions and structures of j-rock music. It's got pop hooks blended with high energy guitar music set to some really addictive beats. It also attempts to invigorate its sound with industrial flourishes. There are loads of elements thrown into the mix, with new wave, synth sounds, sfx, hip hop, techno, rock, disco and maybe a bit of punk to spice things up. The drum beats, bleeps, bloops and hollerin' in the first couple of tracks might shock you at first, but whatever it is, give the album a few trial rounds on your stereo and you'll find that there's something about each song that you'll just take a liking to. I could pick a favourite piece/chunk of music that I like off of each and every track. One thing though, there's an unexpected break mid song in a few of the tracks and the end result is that - it sounds rather choppy but well, you can never really tell what you're going to get with this band. Overall, I think FAKE? might be sounding a little confused at the moment, with the weird sound bits and a direction that isn't quite clear but it does nothing to hide the fact that the band or the frontman K. Lloyd has got loads of cool ideas. Ken might still be experimenting with where he wants to go, but given the potential in this album, the final destination looks to be good and FAKE?'s still worth keeping an eye on. Is this album worth purchasing? Yes. Am I looking forward to checking out the next album? Definitely. |
