A legend

Arai Akino is another one of the japanese artists I grew up with since the 90's. This album compiles song of her greatests works like the two hits ('Tsuki No Ie' and 'Hiro No Tsuki') from 1998 and Kirei no Kanjou. Though her RGB album from 2002 contains these hits as well, this album also has Kakusei Toshi, Voices, Koneko no Shinzou and many other songs I loved as a kid. Arai Akino is an artist with extremely soft vocals and a soothing sound overall. Her overall singing presence is astounding and after listening to her, you'll find that you can't listen to mainstream music without cringing at how loud it is. She really gives you a softer outlook of music. |

My favorite Marshmallow
My favorite Marshmallow
| "Sky Song" is an eclectic album covering twenty years of the artist's career. That in itself is an extraordinary achievement in Japanese popular music. The staying power Miss Arai has is something rare. The reason is as obvious as the quality and emotional content of her music. Especially interesting are the anime themes that represent some of the more unusual and high quality productions. "Kirie na kanjou" (Beautiful Emotions, track 13) from the series "Noir" is one of my favorites. It is typical of the heart-breaking sweetness of which her music is capable despite the tragedy of the themes she is rendering. Equally impressive is "Hiru no tsuki" (The Moon at Midday, track six) from the series "Outlaw Star" that speaks to the optimism in a woman's heart despite the adversity she faces. Also there are "Voices" (track 3) and "I Wanna Be An Angel" (track 15) from "Macross" and "Silent Stream" (track 8) from "A Cat's Heart." You may hear a bit of English from time to time, but it isn't important to understand the words. Akino Arai writes and sings from the heart with an emotional content that anyone, anywhere can understand. You will enjoy this album, any of her albums, for years unless you have a lump of coal where your soul used to be. Everything else is noise by comparison. Enjoy. |

A Japanese "Enya"...
A Japanese "Enya"...
| That is how I would describe Arai Akino. She reminds me very much of Enya's music and soft lilting vocals. However, be aware before you buy, this is a compilation CD. It says "20th Anniversary Album" on the cover. I wish YesAsia had included that somewhere (it IS included in the title on the CD lyric booklet), because honestly, I probably wouldn't have purchased this. While I find the artist to be wonderful and dynamic...some of the tracks sound extremely old. I think that in the course of the 16 songs too many years are covered and it makes for an unusual mix of sounds. The quality of the older songs (production, not singing ability) is not so good and that makes the newer ones really stand out. There isn't a great "flow" on this compilation. It IS however, a nice introduction to this artist and her unusual style and talent, because so much of her works are covered. Still, I think I would prefer a brand-new release by her. And I WILL buy one when it is available. This is an 8-out-10 for me because of the quality of the older songs and the random selection of songs from MANY different years. I still think the singer is amazing, but wish the collection was better made. I hope Arai Akino produces a solid NEW album soon...I feel I would really enjoy that. This one...not so much. |
