Everyone always has a Mass Transit Railway (MTR) inside these packed compartments, and keep either getting on a wrong train, or getting off at the wrong station. In the event, they keep on losing their direction, feeling lost and getting hurt. Fortunately, the recovery would not take long.

Professional Review of "Sound Of Colors"

February 7, 2004

After Turn Left Turn Right made its way to Hong Kong's movie screens, Sound of Colors, another from Jimmy Liao's illustrated novels, follows right behind to spread Christmas blessings from this acclaimed Taiwanese artist to Hong Kong viewers. Even though the previous collaboration of Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai in Turn Left Turn Right did not enjoy much critical or commercial success, Sound of Colors is still a movie worthy of attention simply because of its production crew and cast. Produced by Wong Kar-wai and starring Miriam Yeung Chin-wah and Tong Leung Chiu-wai, who teamed up before in My Lucky Star (2003), Sound of Colors should quench the thirst of Jimmy's solid fan base.

Wai Ka-fai once stated in an interview that it was not at all easy to put Jimmy's illustrated novel onto the screen. When a simple story that you can finish reading in a quarter of an hour is to be made into a 90-minute movie, many producers and Jimmy himself understand that many more characters and storylines have to be added in order to make it work. The reviewer shares this view and believes that the production of Sound of Colors may be a much more difficult task than that of Turn Left Turn Right due to the simplicity of the original. In Jimmy's version, a blind girl and the wonderful journey she goes through in the subway is what the story is all about. It can therefore be imagined how flat it would be if what we got to watch in the entire movie is only this blind girl running around the city.

The movie then adds two more relationships and a bunch of other people to accompany the blind girl and the subway. The leading story takes place in Hong Kong and the supporting relationship between Chang Chen and Dong Jie begins in Taipei and Shanghai. On the Hong Kong side of the story, Zhang Hai-yue (played by Miriam Yeung) is a blind girl who turns a new romantic page of her life after meeting He Xu-ming (played by Tong Leung), an owner of a marriage bureau. Both of the stories actually carry the same theme that it is important to cherish the one you love. When love knocks at your door, go embrace it and be with the one you love so that you leave no regrets in your life.

Joe Ma Wai-ho, the director of Sound of Colors, has largely made his name on comedies, with Feel 100% and Love Undercover being two of his masterpieces. This time, with a script full of integrity, Joe Ma is successful in breathing some freshness into this touching romantic story. Unlike an unfaithful adaptation with artificial and absurd plot twists, like Turn Left Turn Right, Ma has endeavored to keep a plain yet colorful tone, which is the trademark of Jimmy, and his effort pays off well. Besides the director, the leading actress Miriam Yeung also impresses with her first-ever performance as a blind girl. Although there is still a lot of room for improvement in terms of her acting, Miriam should still get credit for having made a step forward out from her typical crack-up-and-laugh image. While the other actors like Tong Leung, Chang Chen and Dong Jie do not make a big impression, Fan Zhi-wei stands out in his role as an angel despite his relatively few scenes. He plays the role in a relaxing, easy and funny way, which makes him the most outstanding character in the movie.

beautiful film Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
in my opinion this film is beautifully done. it is so rare nowadays to have a film for adults without any sex, violence or swearing.
i think tony and miriam play their parts very well and i thorougly enjoyed both performances. the storyline is simple but sweet. i found the way the two stories were intertwined delightful. they were both done so romantically (especially miriam and tonys).
the soundtrack is great too! (i plan to buy it)
i highly recommend this film. if youre not sure, try it on vcd 1st (only about £2) before you buy the dvd.
give it a try.

Right on! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Excellent work by an excellent cast. Like a quiet storm that moves slowly and yet powerfully: the various elements of the movie come together beautifully. The two characters in the second story act as contrast and become *perfect dramatic foils* for the two main characters. Refreshing story, excellent acting, good screenplay, nice camera work, moving musical soundtrack... you named it, it's got it. Watch it once, watch it twice, ... there's something for everyone in the movie.

A Unique Movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This movie was really about simplicity and in this era where humans enjoy complicating everything, it's nice to see something simple. I liked how it also seemed realistic. Tony Leung and Miriam Yeung did a great job acting. The other subplot was also very cute. You do have to watch it a couple of times to understand it though. But you'll want to watch it again and again once you understand what is going on in the movie. It's most certainly a unique movie.

surprisingly enlightening Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
i got this movie probably about 2 months ago and didn't watch till this week and man, was i in for a surprise! guess it's one of Joe Ma's better films and the way he explored the mind of a blind person with his directing was pretty cool stuff. it stars the renowned tony leung and the box-office princess miriam yeung. tony leung's performance here is up to his standards but nothing surprising, though he looks dashingly cute in this movie. miriam on the other hand played hoi-yuek charmingly. turning away from her usual perky, comedic self, this movie shows that miriam can also act different movie genres. when both tony & miriam are on screen, they'll probably keep your eyes glued on the screen with their silent chemistry. they were definitely better then they were in 'my lucky star'. however i only enjoyed this plotline the other 30% sub-plot didn't intrigue me so much. so get your remote controls ready unless you're into korean/japanese storylines, you may want to consider giving it a chance. but other than that, i would definitely recommend this.
