Amazing Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I'm a little upset that I was so late in realizing that the lead guitarist of L'Arc~en~ciel has some solo activites...however, I'm still glad I found it.

This single has got to be one of my favorites by Ken and it really shows what a great musician he is. His vocals are very different from the normal rock bands out there... its soothing with nice vibrato, yet when he yells, it really grabs at you. Though he is a member of a band, his talents are good enough to be a stand alone artist (just as HYDE and tetsu69 from L'Arc~en~ciel do major solo work). However, Ken's talents in composition seem more intense, not to mention his guitar playing skills. He is one of the top guitarist I've seen perform and I've seen a great deal of rock concerts over the years.

I feel that he composed Speed extremely well and with care. It's a mixture of ballad and rock, a bit different from L'Arc~en~ciel or Ken's band' (S.O.A.P) work. The lyrics are very meaningful as well. He is one of those artists I feel deserves some major respect despite the fact that he likes to lie low. He's one of the worlds best hidden, yet not hidden talents.

Brilliant! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Ken-san is a brilliant artist who need not be compared to other members of L'Arc. His musical talents stands out on its own. He is already established as kick-ass guitarist. This cd/dvd is simply wonderful. The album gives you a variety of Ken's musical talents. I love his voice. It goes well with his music. Speed alone gives Ken's musical variety. You get a great combination of rock, a ballad and funk. It is really cool. Empty Rooms is cool melody that he sings in English. Shadow of Your Smile is a deep instrumental, with Ken's smooth guitar and sound effects. It is hypnotic and draws you in. I have not stop playing this cd since I have purchased it. Even the Speed (karaoke) is a cool instrumental to listen to. The dvd is just adorable, especially for Ken fans. It is cool that he gives you 15 minutes behind the scenes of the making of the song and video. He always appears to be cool and down to earth. You can not help but to love the guy. I hope that Ken brings us more of his own works.

a solo artist in his own right Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
To each their own, and though Ken ain't no HYDE (as far as HYDE and L'arc~en~ciel fans are concerned) he's definitely a powerful solo artist in his own right. Ken is recognized as being one of the top guitarists in Japan, and his work and skill show through brilliantly on his first single [SPEED]. The first song and title track is a showcase of Ken's no-frills, stripped-down rock, and he sings with a powerful if somewhat unconventional style. "Empty Rooms," the second track, is a cover of an English song of the same title. The slow background music is rich, and the lyrics are mournful and touching - a nice personal rendition. "The Shadow of Your Smile" is perhaps a mellow track feature for Ken's guitar work, and is completely instrumental. The fourth track is the instrumental version of "Speed."

I am a huge Ken advocate, and I would definitely recommend this single to any (j)rock fan. If you go in expecting to hear Ken's own style (and not some kind of L'arc~en~ciel pet project), you won't be disappointed.

Great Potential Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
1. Speed / I cannot get over how jarring Ken's singing sounds in this track. No matter how many times I listen to the song, I just can't adjust to his voice. I'm not sure if it's intentional or not, but he sounds off key in many places. As a result, the melody is so unfortunately damaged that I honestly cannot like the song. It's a shame.

2. Empty Rooms / I believe most (if not all) of this song is sung in English, though I can't really understand the lyrics due to Ken's pronunciation. Whenever he sang "empty rooms", I thought he had said "Aunty Ruth" instead. O_o But other than the heavily accented English, this is a great mellow song. It's melodious, soothing and reminds me of smooth jazz music (I love smooth jazz). This time, I have nothing to complain about Ken's singing. His voice is appropriately fitting.

3. The Shadow Of Your Smile / 4. Speed(karaoke) / Track 3 is a short instrumental piece and features a trancy, New Age-like guitar sound. It is strangely hypnotizing. Track 4 is the karaoke version of Speed. I like it a lot better than the vocal version. I'm sorry Ken, you really sounded awful in that song.

Other than that strangely off key song, Speed, this is a quite nice single. Ken isn't as good as the other L'Arc~en~Ciel individual projects such as HYDE or Creature Creature (yet). But there's definitely great potential.
