Aired in November 2008, the fascinating 60-minute MBC documentary Spice Route explores the significance of spices in world history, and how spices traveled from Asia to Europe. The program unlocks the ancient routes that brought highly sought after spices to the West and wars that were fought over the spice trade, with a particular emphasis on the rise and spread of pepper. Spice Route is divided into two episodes, with the first discussing the bloody history of the spice trade and the discovery of hot peppers in the Americas. The second episode focuses on pepper, including its history in Korea where it is a common ingredient, its place in world cuisine, and its health benefits. The documentary is directed by Yu Hyeon, and narrated by popular actor Kim Rae Won.
