See everyone's favorite robotic cat in a whole new way with Stand By Me Doraemon, the first Doraemon film produced in 3D computer graphics! Based on seven of the most popular episodes of the manga (including introductory episode Mirai no Koku kara Harubaru to and Sayonara Doraemon), the second collaboration between hit director Yamazaki Takashi and Yagi Ryuichi (Friends – Naki on the Monster Island) offers a new vision of the iconic character that moves both the eyes and the heart. Appealing to nostalgic fans and young new fans alike, Stand By Me Doraemon was one of the highest grossing films in Japan in 2014, topping the box office for five consecutive weeks.

New Animation, Same Doraemon
It's no exaggeration to say that Doraemon embodies the childhoods of multiple generations of people who grew up in East Asia. Since it began serialization in 1969, the manga series, about a magical robotic cat from the future sent back in time to help hapless grade schooler Nobita, has grown into a massive and massively beloved media franchise of comics, anime, movies, toys and licensed products. The manga series ran for 27 years from 1969 until 1996, the anime series has accumulated over 2000 episodes, and every year there is a new Doraemon movie for the whole family to enjoy. In 2014, audiences got two Doraemon movies: New Nobita's Great Demon – Peko and the Exploration Party of Five, the usual annual Doraemon and gang grand adventure in a new place, and Stand By Me Doraemon, a revisiting of Doraemon canon with new technology.

Doraemon in 3D computer animation may seem like an uneasy combination at first, because we all want the world of Doraemon to stay the same forever and not be tainted by modern cynicism. But Stand By Me is actually a very traditional and nostalgic depiction of Doraemon. Just like in the Always - Sunset on Third Street series where dazzling computer graphics served to create a nostalgic, pure-hearted world from a simpler time and place, director and special effects whiz Yamazaki Takashi's vision of Doraemon is aesthetically updated but the themes, sentiments and imagery are the same that we know and love.

Bringing together different stories from the manga, Stand By Me Doraemon plays like a greatest hits album that warms the heart and memories of longtime fans, while also being completely accessible to newcomers as the story starts from the very beginning. The film follows Doraemon and Nobita's friendship from the moment when Doraemon first climbs out of his desk drawer, jumps into the stubborn fights, magical adventures and life lessons of childhood memory, and gives us a heartrending glimpse into a future in which Nobita has grown up. Along the way, we meet the other neighborhood kids and take a delightful tour of the most popular gadgets that Doraemon has ever pulled out of its pocket, like the Dokodemo Door, Take-copter and Memory Bread.

Stand By Me Doraemon is a wondrous and bittersweet journey through the Doraemon universe, and the stories of friendship, magic and growing up are as touching as the watery eyes on the cover promise. By the end of the film, one can't help feeling wholeheartedly that "Stand by me, Doraemon" isn't just Nobita's entreaty, but that of the audience as well.
