Director Negishi Kichitaro has been an established name in Japanese cinema for the past thirty years, recently garnering acclaim for his 2005 film What the Snow Brings. One of his most representative works is no doubt 1983's crowd-pleasing Story of the Detective, starring top actress of the day Yakushimaru Hiroko (Sailor Suit and Machine Gun). Based on an Akagawa Jiro novel, at the time Story of the Detective (a.k.a. Tantei Monogatari) pulled in a whopping 2.8 billion yen at the box office, winning audiences over with its fun story and charming performances. A mix of youth tropes and detective drama, this classic 80s popcorn flick is as entertaining now as it was 20 something years ago.

Naomi (Yakushimaru Hiroko) is a college student set to leave for the States in a week, and Shuichi (Matsuda Yusaku) is a private detective hired to be her bodyguard. When the two accidentally get pulled into a murder case involving a gang leader's son, they work together to investigate the mystery. But this unlikely duo seems to have gotten way in over their heads.

Entertaining murder mystery Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"The Story of the Detective" took me to places I never expected. The trailers gave the impression that it is something of a lighthearted romp. But in the course of this unusual murder mystery, the movie serves up nudity, simulated sex, and some graphic violence ... as well as some lighthearted moments.

Someone has hired a private detective to observe the university student played by Yakushimaru Hiroko. Hiroko is about to depart for the U.S., where her father resides. However, the detective's former wife becomes the primary suspect in the murder of a yakuza kingpin and the detective and the amazingly resourceful Hiroko seek to prove her innocence.

The plot has endless twists and turns, but the mystery ultimately is resolved in an unexpected fashion. Surprisingly, the movie doesn't end with the resolution of the mystery -- it continues for another twenty minutes with an unusual romantic subplot.

"The Story of the Detective" is entertaining and Miss Yakushimaru delivers a winning performance. I can recommend it highly, but, due to the sex and violence, and can't recommend it for kids.
