Strings tells the tale of a king, filled with guilt and remorse after a lifetime of war and bloody conflict. Knowing that his son, Hal, is more peaceful and compassionate, the king resolves to kill himself, hoping that Hal will bring peace to their kingdom once and for all. The king's brother, however, wants nothing of the sort. He is greedy and hungry for power, so when he is the first to discover the body of the king, he disguises the suicide as a murder, inspiring young Hal to declare war on the rival kingdom.

Drawing upon everything from The Lord Of The Rings, to The Dark Crystal and even Hamlet, Strings is both a very traditional tale of honor and revenge, but also a highly imaginative and self-referential piece. The characters acknowledge their strings, identifying them as their lifeforce with almost religious sanctity. They look to the heavens and contemplate who, quite literally, is pulling their strings. and when a character is killed, it is by having their head-string severed.

It is this intelligence, with which the whole film is handled, that makes Strings so unique and enjoyable. The wooden puppets are beautifully carved and move with the dignified elegance of seasoned Shakespearian thesps. The sets have been created with equal imagination and are shot and lit so dramatically that it easy for the viewer to forget they are watching models and to lose themselves completely in this fantasy world.

This DVD features both the English audio track, featuring the voice talents of Derek Jacobi and Catherine McCormack among others, and also a Thai dub track.
