本片改自五十年代台灣西部鹽村的真實故事。
本片講述當年「烏腳病」正侵襲台灣西部一帶，每一戶人家都有這病患每到晚上，痛苦的哀號聲處處可聞，唯一自救的方法，就是把腳鋸掉。邱水龍就是「烏腳病」的典型犧牲者，早前兒子出海喪命，媳婦也浪跡他鄉跳艷舞維生，留下天資較差的外孫與他相依為命。人生將盡，邱開始反思生命的意義……
"Such a Life!" is a real story that happened in a small village located in west coast of Taiwan around 1960's. At that time, a disease called "Black-feet' was afflicting the village in which Ah-Chung lived.
Ah-chung was a quiet and simple-minded boy whose only other family member Living with him at that time, his grangfater, is also affected. The village is so badly influenced that almost every house had a patient. At night, you could hear the suffering everywhere, and the only way to alleviate that pain was to remove the sick leg.
This disease was causd by the drinking water there. To stop the disease from gettingworse, people living there had to stop drinking from wells. But most of the inhabitants were too poor to use tap water, so they could do nothing but accept their fate hopelessly. Ah Chung's grandfather had already lost one leg, now his another leg was staring to show the symptoms. Ah-Chung badly wanted to do something for his grandfather so badly. and in his mind, he imagined buying milkfish for him, cause that is his favorite food. To accomplish that, this little boy start stealing and finally got killed.
