Superb career retrospective from a unique talent
| I used to own Chara's "Junior Sweet" album and have enjoyed some of her other songs on compilation albums, but for me Chara has been little more than an interesting curiosity. This "Sugar Hunter" 2-CD set changes all that. After listening to these twenty-five songs recorded between 1991 and 2003, most of them self-penned, I now regard Chara as a true artist, a major talent, and a unique voice. Of course, with Chara, it is that voice that first strikes the listener, a bittersweet childlike instrument that sounds unlike anyone else. But as one continues to listen to this album, one becomes deeply impressed with the exceptional variety and quality of Chara's songwriting skills, a talent that was present from her earliest recordings. This is great stuff! "Sugar Hunter" richly deserves my highest recommendation. |
