Adapted from the famous and popular novel of the same name by Xu Su, this two-part romance epic stands as one of the best films produced by the Dianmou / Cathay Film Studio in the sixties. The title refers to the three female lead characters in the story, but almost best describes the luminous images of the three actresses: Julie Yeh Feng as the brave and radiant "Sun" Grace Chang (Ge Lan) as the solemn and pure "Moon" and Lucilla You Min as the lonely and fragile "Star". Filmed at a budget of over HK$700,000 (the cost of at least five Mandarin films or fourteen Cantonese films put together at the time) and spanning a shooting period of more than ten moths, Sun, Moon and Star still looks magnificent and irresistibly romantic after more than four decades.

A flawed Part 2 Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
One of the great strengths of Part 1 of this movie is squandered in Part 2. Much of Part 2 consists of a series of cataclysmic events and unlikely coincidences. Drama is traded for melodrama.

On the other hand, the movie remains true to its characters. While the story becomes less believable, the central characters remain very believable and (with the exception of Ge Lan's character) their ultimate fates follow logically from what the story reveals about them.

Part 2 definitely is more manipulative and less realistic than Part 1, but it still carries a strong emotional impact. Highly recommended.

Superb epic drama Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
What sets this remarkable film apart is its pacing. Yes, it has a great cast and is beautifully staged. But, instead of piling up one dramatic event on top of another, this movie unfolds at a surprisingly modest pace that feels natural, lets the story breathe, and lets us come to know the characters well, to see them grow, and to care deeply about them. Ge Lan and You Min are terrific and Yeh Feng's performance is so vivid that she practically pops off the screen. Very, very highly recommended.

One of Cathay's best Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
I pick this one of Cathay's best because it had 3 of their best actress.
Lucilla You gave an outstanding performance and won the best actress award and Julie Yeh, who replaced a role originally for Lin Cui was good too.
By comparison, Julie Ge was overshadowed by them.
I would have given this film a 10 if not spoiled by the not so good acting of Chang Yang's un convincing role.

Well Loved Epic Returns Triumphantly Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
How wonderful it is to see "Star Moon and Sun" again,
after all these years ! For those who have been through the Sino-Japanese War and for those who loved
the novel when it was a big seller, there is nothing
more nostalgic and heartwarming than to see this epic
movie again. For those who wonder why these three female stars were so popular in their heyday, this couldn't be a better example of their star power and craftmanship. Lucilla Yu Min who won the FIRST Golden Horse Best Actress award for her performance in this movie has a RARE luminosity that can only rival Audrey
Hepburn, those big eyes can tell you a million thoughts and brings tears to your eyes with her simple
expression and body language. For "Moon"--Grace Chang or Ge Lan (mistakenly labeled as Julie in YesAsia's cast names)has a graceful disposition than calls to mind Deborah Kerr of the British screen, her singing in the garden of her home was so beautiful and truly conveyed a maiden's love for her "ideal man". As for "Sun" -Julie Yeh Fung (who made a concert tour recently) portrayed the new Chinese feminist idea--strong, independent and ready to challenge everything put in front of her but still understands old virtues
like loyalty and sacrifice, her performance added immensely to already well-acted ensemble of great actors in this beautifully realized romantic drama. I hope EMI realize that with this reappearance of this well loved epic they should dust off their master tapes
for the soundtrack album--another treat awaits all when
we can play all the songs from this favorite movie again ! Thank you Cathay Studio, Panorama for bringing
back a well-loved friend into our home screens !

The Movie to Remember Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is a very good movie that we can remember for a very long time.
The 3 main characters are very carefully chosen and each of them shine individually yet also bring the harmony interaction with the others. Yu Min, Grace and Julie all have the particular quality that you can only find in the 50' and they interred their roles just perfect,(nothing more or nothing less ).
The story was from the war background that also give the movie a touch of glory that the people went through. They grew through the hardship that made them strong and was able to deal with the storms that life could bring. They were in the time that they know how to love, how to share the love personally and how to contribute the love in the greater sense. What we see from the movie are something deeper in meaning, something stronger in the sense and something very touching in the heart.
We are glad to see that classic films of Cathay ( MP GI ) are coming to life again in the format of VCD and DVD. shining brightly together at the same time with
the classic movies of Shaw Brothers. Really great news to the fans. We are looking forward to the up coming release soon.
