Another winner from Itami
|
"Supermarket Woman" may be the most conventional movie that Itami Juzo ever made. It lacks the flights of fancy that make "Tampopo" so delectable and the bitter satire that gives "A Taxing Woman" its edge. The film follows the familiar formula of the bumbling underdogs who pull together to defeat the arrogant rival. Yet it does so with such energy and affection that the viewer becomes captivated. A supermarket called Honest Goro, with no competition and a disinterested general manager, has become a sloppy mess, delivering second-rate goods in a dirty environment. Now a big national chain store, Bargains Galore!, has opened in the neighborhood and threatens to take away Honest Goro's business. The thuggish owner (Ito Shiro) of Bargains Galore! makes a lowball offer to the owners of Honest Goro to buy their store, so they may put it out of business and raise prices. Honest Goro's owners are inclined to accept the offer until its General Manager Kobayashi Goro (Tsugawa Masahiko) runs into old school chum Inoue Hanako (Miyamoto Nobuko), who astonishes him with her insights into the supermarket biz. Goro hires Hanako to serve as his head cashier, a position from which Hanako begins to remake Honest Goro into the most customer-friendly supermarket in Japan, while butting heads with her unconfident general manager and the store's intransigent department heads. Miyamoto Nobuko is a whirlwind of comic energy as the endlessly creative Hanako. For her, every problem is an opportunity to do better; she refuses to be defeated by her circumstances. "Supermarket Woman" uses its simple story (and Miss Miyamoto's powerhouse character) to explore a number of interesting themes, including whether a man and woman can be friends without becoming romantically involved, the nobility that comes from a job well done, and the ends that can be achieved when a team pulls together. I recommend "Supermarket Woman" highly. Also check out the similarly supermarket-themed and similarly entertaining "Star Reformer", starring Oda Yuji and Shibasaki Kou (available from YesAsia). |

Another Excellent Film By Itami
| Supa no Onna or Supermarket Woman tells the story of a supermerket facing a grim fate of being bought over by a successful rival. Hanako is the long time friend of th supermarket's manager and together with the staff of the supermarket, strive to make it the most user-friendly supermarket in Japan. This film is another funny and enjoyable one that really motivates its audience, one will enjoy watching the movie as Hanako faces the problems and single-handedly turns the fortunes of the supermarket around. |
