Directed by Nishitani Hiroshi (Star Reformer), Suspect X transplants the TV drama's winning formula and the mind-twisting appeal of Higashino Keigo's original story straight to the big screen. Eternal heartthrob Fukuyama Masaharu stars as charmingly nerdy genius physicist and professor Yukawa Manabu who uses his supreme intellect and reasoning to help headstrong detective Kaoru (Kou) solve mysterious cases. This time Yukawa meets his match in Ishigami Tetsuya (acclaimed actor Tsutsumi Shinichi, Always - Sunset on Third Street), a math genius and Yukawa's former classmate who orchestrates the seemingly perfect murder cover-up. Can Yukawa unwrap the mystery, and bring his friend to justice?

Hitchcock couldn't have done it better

This movie is a gem. With an excellent cast, ingenious story, intelligent script, creative cinematography, and masterful editing, director Nishitani Hiroshi has crafted one of the best films of suspense I've seen in years. The ex-husband of Hanaoka Yasuko (Matsuyuki Yasuko) bursts into the home of Yasuko and her daughter. When he begins to beat Yasuko's daughter, Yasuko does what she needs to do to protect her child ... and her ex-husband ends up dead. Yasuko's neighbor, the genius mathematician Ishigami Tetsuya (Tsutsumi Shinichi), overhears the commotion and offers to get Yasuko out of this mess. The police soon find a dead body whose identity seems to have been totally obscured. However, they soon believe they have figured out who the victim was and Hanaoka Yasuko quickly becomes their prime suspect. Police detective Utsumi Kaoru (Shibasaki Kou) aided by brainy physics prof Yukawa Manabu (Fukuyama Masaharu) are on the case. Can they solve it or has the math whiz managed to outwit them? Big stars Shibasaki and Fukuyama are terrific as the investigators who seek to untangle this seemingly unsolvable case, but Tsutsumi Shinichi and Matsuyuki Yasuko (who was so good as the dance teacher in "Hula Girls") are even better in their beautifully nuanced performances. The story, although unfolded at a deliberate pace, grips the viewer throughout. We even get the treat of hearing a lovely Kou Shibasaki song over the closing credits! I absolutely loved this great film and recommend it very highly. |
