Both men are enthralled by Meimei, but Mardar has a dark past which continues to haunt him. Once upon a time, Mardar was in love with a pretty, innocent girl named Moudan (also played by Zhou Xun). His affection for her was pure, but his involvement in the criminal underworld would destroy any chance of love. Moudan was ripped from him, and Mardar was sent to jail. Now a free man, Mardar is confronted with Moudan's doppelganger, Meimei. What, if any relation do the two women have with one another? Released in the United States as Suzhou River, Lou Ye's Suzhou recalls the dark romance and fascinating mystery of Alfred Hitchcock's classic Vertigo.
