　　Famed actor Wu Chia-hsiang directed dramas, fantasies, romances, and this jaunty, exciting, swashbuckling tale of a Chinese Robin Hood who fought evil warlords decades ago. Yueh Hua stars -- in one of his earliest films -- as a circus acrobat who becomes "The Masked Robber" to defeat corrupt government officials. Revenge is, indeed, sweet for the protagonists in this lively adventure of fast action, close calls, and clever conceits.

 'Sweet is Revenge' is good, underrated stuff Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
'Sweet is Revenge'(1967) is a Shaw Brothers-produced swashbuckling action-caper film directed by Wu Jia Xiang('Guess Who Killed My Twelve Lovers', 'A Place to Call Home'). In the old Chinese Republic(1911-1949, I presume, judging by the cop uniforms), a former circus performer named Xiao Pao(Yueh Hua/Ngok Wah)battles corrupt officials and he fights for the poor and oppressed. He's a Chinese "Robin Hood". Aside from some minor fisticuffs, 'SIR' is NOT a kung fu film! The fisticuffs look more like 'The Quiet Man' than 'The 5 Fingers of Death'. Xiao Pao even dons a black suit with a black bandana to go over his face; 'SIR' may have been an influence on 'Iron Monkey'(1993), the one directed by Yuen Woo Ping. Xiao Pao can use fisticuffs, gadgets, he can swap clothes with an individual in less than a minute, and he can even use his cunning to sow the seeds of mistrust among the baddies. Then again, Xiao Pao isn't a "super-human"; the cops manage to capture and torture him in one scene. Aside from some strong scenes of violence, 'SIR' isn't as visceral as a Chang Cheh flick or some of Lau Ka Leung's films. After battling the corrupt Commander Zheng, Xiao Pao(alias The Masked Thief), plans on leaving town. However, one of Commander Zheng's relatives, Ma Qian-li(Chen Hung Lien), wants Dr. Li Da Wei's fiancee Wang Dan Peng(Li Ching), as a "trophy wife". By pulling some strings, Ma Qian Li manages to get his way and he ruins the lives of some people in the process. When nobody, not even the authorities, will help Dr. Li Da Wei and Dan Peng, Xiao Pao must use his cunning to save the day! Angela Yu-chien co-stars as Commander Zheng's pampered wife and Ku Feng also appears as a prison guard. Even at a mere 85 minutes, 'Sweet is Revenge' moves kinds of sluggishly, pace-wise. I am glad Li Ching's character, Wang Dan Peng, wasn't watered down to window dressing, but Dan Peng doesn't amount to more than a damsel-in-distress. Is it just me...or did anyone notice that the guy who plays Deputy Wang sounded like a Chinese Joe Pesci with his loud, scratchy voice? Oh, well. 'SIR' still wins some points for creativity, its solid performances, and Wu Jia Xiang's capable direction. This is a solid film that most people aren't too crazy about.
