Swift Sword (Hong Kong Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Bestselling novelist Jin Yong's excellent wuxia novel The Sword Stained With Royal Blood gets adapted for the big screen in Swift Sword, a pulse-pounding swordplay adventure directed by Ho Meng Hua. Ling Yun portrays Bai Yi Ping, a man on a mission to wipe out as many members of a rival family as possible. His reason? They're responsible for the vicious rape and murder of his beloved sister, and Yi Ping is out for justice! Blinded by rage, he goes so far as to abduct one of their own, a girl named Qiu Xia (Lily Li). It's all a ploy to lure her father (Lo Lieh) out in the open, but to Yi Ping's surprise, he soon finds himself falling for his captive prisoner, a turn of events that spurs him to give up his plan for vengeance. Although the two quickly fall in love, it's no surprise that her family is furious at the match. A confrontation ensues, and Yi Ping ends up at the bottom of a cliff, his final fate unknown.

The villains abscond with Yi Ping's prized treasure map, the one he'd hoped would lead him to some gold that he could use to support his fellow countrymen in their attempts to fend off the barbarian invasions. Later, General Xiao Yong (Wong Yue, from Dirty Ho) arrives on the scene and discovers Yi Ping's final fate. A quest for the gold ensues, but little does Xiao Yong realize that one of his compatriots, Leng Ning Zhi (Esther Niu Niu) is masquerading as a man and looking to take the treasure for her own family! Will she succeed? And what will happen when the title weapon is unsheathed? These answers and more lie in Swift Sword, an action-packed martial arts epic that effortlessly translates Jin Yong's popular novel to the cinema!

導演: 何夢華
Director: Ho Meng-hua

From the director known for giving Jackie Chan a break in his early kung-fu films, Ho Meng-hua strikes gold again with Swift Sword. Starring a menagerie of established Shaw Brothers' talent like kung-fu comedienne Wang Yu, female kung-fu fighter Hui Ying-hung (the lady Michelle Yeoh tries to emulate) and perennial bad guy Lo Lieh, it's a movie about cross people and crossed swords where our heroes discover that gold is not as precious as friendship.

The Best Version Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This story has been filmed many times. It is Sword Stained With Royal Blood. I have seen the Danny Lee version with Elizabeth Lee and also the Venoms version with Ching Li. In my opinion, this version is the best as it is simple storytelling acted by charismatic stars like Ling Yun, Lily Li, Wong Yue and Kara Hui Ying Hung. I am not quite fond of Esther Niu Niu from The Brave Archer 2 & 3 but here, she acquits herself well though needing stuntdoubling help in the fighting scenes. I do recommend this movie. It has an old-school feel about it and that's a compliment!
