Professional Review of "Swordsman 2 (DVD) (Japan Version)"

April 7, 2008

This professional review refers to Swordsman II
Like a great pop song that gets more profound with each listen, Swordsman II has more on its mind than ninjas riding giant throwing stars through blue-lit forests fighting whip-wielding women who fling snakes at them, but it does have plenty of that kind of thing to keep you entertained while you ponder its grander themes like the corruption of power.

Jet Li and Michelle Reis play two swordspeople who are retiring from the martial world because Li likes to drink all day and Michelle likes to scold him, and the two of them have a good thing going with this routine and want to keep at it with no outside interruptions except for their eight brothers who are retiring with them, but they all like to drink and scold as well, so this shouldn't be a problem for anyone. Unfortunately, one of Li's old flames, Ying (Rosamund Kwan), has had her father, Wu, kidnapped by the sketchy Sun Moon sect. Suddenly Li has been pulled into the midst of a power struggle that will play football with his heart and soul as he comes up against crazed minority spokesperson, Asia the Invincible (played with icy authority by Brigette Lin), and Ying's dad, who has gone insane from his years of confinement and torture at the hands of Asia. Wu wants revenge, and although Jet and his brothers don't want to help, you know how crazy people are: they can't take no for an answer. Needless to say, things get messy, and it's not just from the giant hooks Wu likes to whack into people's backs.

Ching Sui-tung and Tsui Hark are the Douglas Sirk and Ross Hunter of the martial arts movie, and Swordsman 2 is their masterpiece: Tsui's slick production style harnessing Ching's straight-from-the-id, free-association film making. Swordsman 2 unfolds like a beautiful nightmare, all the action adhering to a loopy logic, as affairs of the heart and soul are played out on a grand scale. It helps that Jet Li and Brigette Lin are perhaps the greatest pair of star-crossed lovers in all of moviedom. Aside from the obvious complications (he wants to retire, she wants to rule the world) they are further separated by the fact that they're both playing men. It's an interesting movie. To say the least.

One of the Best Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Without doubt one of the best film in the martial art /fantsy genre...visually stunning, great characterisation by Brigette Lin as Asia Invincible...sad poignant in parts, (Candce On has a nice minor part too). Greatplay between action/suspense and comedy...and some really creepy parts. The duel between the feminine , needles and the masculine, claws is a classic...I like this genre of movie where females are often as powerful as their male counterpart.

Visually colorful Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
You definately have to be a fan of wire work to enjoy this movie. Great physical posturing as the ever mesmerizing Bridget Lin can be. This definately is better than the original in the fact that you can actually follow most of the action sequences & story. The only reason this movie has replay value for me is due to my not being able to remember what I had seen...it doesn't make a lasting impression as some films do. (completing the trilogy with the East is Red is worth while if you enjoy this genre)

Tsui Hark Does It Again Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
In the sequel to Swordsman I again Tsui Hark makes a beutiful film that now years later when its finally is released digitally remastered, looks the way it always should have.

As the first one this ain't an all action filled film but a drama kind of film made with interesting battles as its of course made in HK, lots of wire-fu is involved in the film but its very well executed and looks really good!

If you liked the first film Im sure you will like this one and if you like this one you would own "east is red" the 3rd installment to make the collection complete.

More exciting than the first! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
For some reason, Hong Kong sequels aren't as notoriously dreadful as Hollywood sequels. Most of the cast seems to have been "updated", with a younger Jet Li playing the main role of 'Ling', the beautiful Rosamund and Michelle, and my favourite Brigitte Lin who plays the most intriguing role of a new character 'Asia Invincible' (or 'Dawn Invincible'). This is where the Sacred Scroll comes in, but it doesn't explain how they got it from Jacky Cheung's character in part 1. Anyway, I love the vocal soundtrack to this movie. Although the song 'Hero of Heroes' inspires a lot of gallantry, it seems to be a little overdone in this sequel. Some interesting martial arts moves, a little comedic humour and great costume designs. On a personally biased note, I think Brigitte Lin creates some amazing visions of beauty in this one!

Dong Fang Bu Bai & Sun Moon Sect Live Forever Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Absolute must see & must own for serious Hong Kong Film enthusiasts. Excellent plot, acting & action. Very attention grabbing hyperactive movie. Ling Wu Chung, Kiddo & the Wah Mountain Boys continue their laughing retreat from the Jianghu world. The theme song will stay with you for a long time . Michelle Reis exudes plenty of sex appeal. Brigitte Lin's androgyny/transgenderism is magnetic. Rosamund Kwan plays Jet Li's love interest very well. Jet Li's turns in one of his best performances. A lot of HK & Western films were inspired by this great movie. This sequel surpasses even the original Swordsman movie.
