YesAsia Editorial Description

Before 2005's Sympathy for Lady Vengeance and 2003's Old Boy, there was Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, filmmaker Park Chan-Wook's startling first installment in what would later become known as the director's "Vengeance Trilogy." Released in 2002, the film kicks off by detailing the plight of Ryu (Shin Ha-Kyun), a green-haired deaf mute who dutifully cares for his ailing elder sister. Without the proper medical attention, however she is bound to die of kidney failure, and since there's no suitable donor in sight, Ryu decides to turn to the black market for help, selling his kidney in exchange for a fresh one for his sister. Sadly, when Ryu awakens from the surgery, he learns that he's been swindled not only out of his life savings, but his kidney as well! Even worse, he soon learns from the doctors that a donor has been found, and that all he needs to do is put up the money for the transplant!

With no legal way to come up with the cash, Ryu and his girlfriend Cha Yeong-Mi (Bae Doo-Na), decide to abduct the daughter of Park Dong-Jin (Song Kang-Ho), a wealthy industrialist and Ryu's former boss. The plan is simple: hold her hostage until Dong-Jin pays the ransom. And things seem to be going smoothly, that is - until a fatal accident turns this "simple plan" into an all-out nightmare for Ryu and Yeong Mi. Little did they expect that their scheme would go so very, very wrong and cause a seemingly normal man to spin out of control, blazing a trail of vengeance from which neither party may survive!

Professional Review of "Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance (Hong Kong Version)"

January 23, 2006

This professional review refers to Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (SE)
Picture this: you struggle to consciousness on a rough concrete floor in a building abandoned before completion. You're cold. You're naked. Your body is racked with pain, which you trace to the roughly stitched wound on your side, marking where your second kidney used to be. You can scarcely stand, yet you somehow struggle down many flights of stairs to a nearby road, and try to hitch a lift back to town, because there's no other option.

Welcome to the world of organ-legging.

And welcome also to Park Chan Wook’s exceedingly uncomfortable masterpiece, Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance. I should warn you that this film is not for the squeamish or the sensitive. This is a film that will rip out your still-beating heart and rub it in your face. As the final credits roll, you’ll be gasping for air and feeling like a transplant patient yourself.

If you’re game for that, then you’ll find Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance to be an exceptional film, one that you’ll remember for years. For starters, Park has impeccable visual sense. Each shot is composed so beautifully that you’ll want to fall into the screen, which makes an odd contrast with the often harrowing subject matter. This visual beauty is complemented by Park’s addition of oddly quirky minor characters, such as the heroin-addicted organ-legging doctor, or the formation masturbation team of boys who live next door to Ryu and his sister.

But those aspects are minor: what makes Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance such a giant of a film are the story and the performances. The story, unrelenting in its savage condemnation of economic rationalist values, gives a picture of life on the margins that is at once completely ordinary and totally harrowing.

And the performances are stunning. Shin Ha Kyun (JSA, Save The Green Planet), as the green-haired deaf-mute artist forced to quit art college for foundry work, then sacked from the foundry, is magnificent. He’s utterly convincing, and utterly heart-rending. Bae Doo-na (Barking Dogs Never Bite), as the fiercely independent radical girlfriend, is also captivating, with her revolutionary leaflets and ‘good kidnappings and bad kidnappings’ rationale. Song Kang Ho (Shiri, JSA, The Foul King), as Ryu's boss and the father of the kidnapped girl, rounds out the powerful trio, portraying an ordinary man driven to extremes. All three main characters are strong and engaging, which gives this film much of its power to hurt.

There’s little in the way of soundtrack, which helps drive home the film’s stark message. Real life doesn’t have a soundtrack, just as, in real life, violence hurts a lot. The lack of soundtrack also evokes the world of Ryu, the main character, whose deafness makes him more vulnerable. In several scenes, we see the world through his eyes, in total silence. It's an eerie contrast with the world of sound, and quite unsettling.

This is a powerful film that says much about how we organize our societies, and what turns ordinary people into monsters. It emphasizes the oft-repeated point that revenge often begets more revenge, in a cycle that sucks in more and more innocent victims. And in Park’s world, we’re all potential victims, and we’re all potential monsters.

If you have high expectation for Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance because of director Park Chan-Wook's previous blockbuster hit Joint Security Area, you may feel little disappointed as Park exercised a very different approach in this movie. It seems that the priority of the director was not to please the audience, but rather to satisfy his own desire. As a matter of fact, this is a film that does not reflect the taste of the general audience, which makes me feel quite inappropriate to categorize it under the mainstream commercial cinema field in which the consumer is always the priority of the distributor.

Director Park Chan-Wook finished the script of this movie long before he wrote Joint Security Area. Due to the dark and pessimistic attitude of the story, and also because of his lack of fame, he was unable to find an investor at that time. However, with the success of Joint Security Area in 2000, he became one of the most powerful and influential figure in the movie business, hence he was allowed to start the production of any movie he likes, including Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance... That's why I tended to call it a fulfillment of the director's desire. Yes, this is a very dark and catastrophic tale. Even though there are a lot of ransom movies around, it is quite rare to have one that only contains pure tragedy. Everyone in the movie has unbelievably bad fortune. What is ironic is that, with the film title of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, director Park didn't appear to show any sympathy for his characters.

Ryu (Shin Ha-Kyun) is a deaf and dumb guy. His sister is seriously sick. In order to collect enough money for an operation, his friend (Bae Doo-Na) encourages him to kidnap the daughter of a factory owner (Song Kang-Ho). Song pays the ransom but later finds out that her daughter is dead. He makes up his mind to fight back by all means! What I like about this movie is that Park Chan-Wook attempted to tell a story with the minimum amount of dialogues possible. Background music is minimized as well. He relied heavily on visual means to build up the characters and furnish the atmosphere of the story. The artistic vision of the director is highly recognized and appreciated! Although the pace is slow, you'll never find the movie boring as Park would keep your eyes busy with a lot of beautifully designed compositions and a series of visually stunning images. Each composition is like a piece of oil painting that is worth to enjoy separately on its own. It is a movie that requires you to pay serious attention to, if you are not a focused person, I recommend you to see it more than once, in this way, you can make sure you won't miss anything!

The cast is the major attraction for general audience. In this regard, Song Kang-Ho, Shin Ha-Kyun and Bae Doo-Na have all done their parts more than satisfactory. Shin Ha-Kyun's improvement is notable. He proved to us that he is not only limited to comedy roles. With a good director and a profound script, he can handle any roles convincingly. There are also many cameos, including Jeong Jae-Yeong (No Blood No Tears) and Ryu Seung-Wan (Die Bad). But no matter the three leads or the cameos, they are only a plot device of Park. The real protagonist of the movie is always Park Chan-Wook and his unique vision.

To me, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance looks more like an art house movie than a regular mainstream commercial flick. Similar to its black and white poster, the tone of the film is very gloomy and hopeless. A piece of advice is, if you want to be on the right track and enjoy the most out of it, don't make the same mistake as most audience by expecting it to be another Joint Security Area.

Korean classic Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Another example of why some of the best films being made these days come from Korea. Park Chan-Wook once again shows the rest of the world how films should be made. Very violent in parts, great storyline and Song Kang-Ho,(JSA), proving once again why he is one of Koreas best actors! If you enjoyed Oldboy you have to see this film!

Consequence fueled by rage Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
It appears to be that whenever a director makes it big, he or she makes a labor of love. A film that most likely wouldn't be made if not for the previous one's(JSA) bench mark status. And in many ways I can see it in the SFMV(sympathy for mr.vengeance), However this gem of a film is somewhat of a hit or miss. Love it or hate it. Being that I call it a "gem" you can see that I loved it. The basic premise of the film is that Ryu lives with his sister whose dying, which can be alleviated through a costly sugery. Ryu with the best of intent, goes to a bargain doctor to sell one of his kidneys but gets jipped, left naked, and robbed of his filtration organ(kidney), so then begins that whole process of kidnapping the owner's daughter of the factory where he works. Ofcourse by the title, something dealing with revenge is bound to happen. But what prompts or fuels it? Well that for you to watch and find out. The performances by the three leads are extremely effective. S. Korea seems to be blessed with such natural actor/actresses. For the perfromances, deaf and "dumb" Ryu is calculating and determined but at a disadvangtage because ot his diablility. But yet actor Chin-ha Kyun, plays with him with such dexertiriy and realism by showing mere facial expressions. So Kang Ho shows how a how a loving father can become transformed into a hitman who works for revenge of a daughter(I miss his high pitched surprise vocal expressions in previous films), and Bae Du Na looks very attractive in this one. Normally I don't consider her to be good looking but there something about her in this film, perhaps it's those shorts or that layered hair. Either way, one of her best work in fact it may make you cringe it one scene. The DVD itself has a nice transfer, the films gritty look and realistic look is one of it's strong suits, the sound doesn't really warrent a desire for DTS or 5.1. The film is quiet. Your really just along for the ride with the characters. Thats what makes the film so good, is that the raw emotion is enough. It doesn't require a soundtrack to accompany the killing or the tragedy. The extras are not subtitled as usual. Though there are some nice outtakes , we don't really need subs for those, but yes, they would've been nice. So,overall, not a film for everyone. Some people I know would hate me or consider me officialy morbidly weird if they watched it and I told them I loved. It's really for the art. So think of this film as the same. If you feel repulsed, disgusted, depressed, and shocked thats what your supposed to feel. Kinda of like "Mystic River" on depressants.
