Late actor-director Itami Juzo called his acclaimed sophomore feature Tampopo a "noodle western", and the film certainly lives up to its unique billing. Released in 1985, Tampopo is one of Itami's most well-known films, revolving around the warm relationship between life and food. Itami's wry humor, penchant for quirkiness, and keen eye for characters, which become his mark in later films like A Taxing Woman (1987), Supermarket Womam (1995), and A Quiet Life (1996), are already on delicious display in this delightfully surreal feature. Tampopo plays out in episodic manner, with the primary story revolving around the film's titular shopkeeper and cook played by Itami's wife and leading actress of choice, Miyamoto Nobuko. The film's extended cast include Watanabe Ken (Letters from Iwo Jima), Yakusho Koji (Retribution), Yamazaki Tsutomu (Go), and Kuroda Fukumi (Tales of a Golden Geisha).

Truckers Goro (Yamazaki Tsutomu) and Gun (Watanabe Ken) stop for noodles at a sorry roadside stand run by a young widow named Tampopo (Miyamoto Nobuko). After some eating and arguing, Goro and Gun decide to help Tampopo fulfill her dream of mastering the art of ramen and setting up the best noodle eatery. In other parts of town, a yakuza (Yakusho Koji) and his mistress (Kuroda Fukumi) come up with new erotic ways to use their food; an old woman (Hara Izumi) drives a shopkeeper up the wall with her food squeezing; a junior colleague (Kato Toshimune) orders his meal in French; and a classroom of women learn how to eat spaghetti the western way.
