YesAsia Editorial Description
The classic Shaw Brothers martial arts film Temple of the Red Lotus introduced audiences to Jimmy Wang Yu, a skinny young kid who would one day become the star of the One-Armed Swordsman and Chinese Boxer films! Wu (Jimmy Wang Yu) journeys to meet his bride-to-be Lian Chu (Chin Ping), but his future in-laws are constantly under attack by the vicious Red Lotus Sect. What Wu doesn't realize is that his future family belongs to a gang of ruthless bandits warring with the Red Lotus Sect, and there is a price for knowing their identity. Wu wants out, and wishes to take Lian Chu with him, but to get out he has to defeat each member of the family one by one! And even if he gets out, what of the Red Lotus Sect? And who is the mysterious Red Lady Sword (Ivy Ling Po)? An exciting martial arts action film with surprising touches of emotion, Temple of the Red Lotus started a Shaw Brothers franchise that would go on to include the films The Twin Swords and The Sword and the Lute.

Classic Operatic Swordplay
| Slow in pacing & fighting sequences if you're used to Shaw Bros or martial arts/action flicks but a classic non-the-less. A young Lo Lieh & equally dashing Jimmy Wang playing a naive boy bring the typical romantic charm of this operatic swordplay. Even though the fighting is the slower methodical opera style, the gravity of having to fight your way out of a "kung-fu" family & fearful of having to fight the women still induces anxiety. Beautifully re-mastered & worthy of any collection as a classic. |

Rating upgrade
| I watched "Temple of the Red Lotus" for a third time and now I must admit that I underestimated it in my previous review. Perhaps one of my problems with this film is that the English subtitles aren't great. It took a while for the story to sink in; it actually is a bit more complex and interesting than the typical martial arts movie. I still have to maintain that the film moves at quite a slow pace and the fight scenes are unspectacular by the standards set in subsequent Shaw Bros. movies. Nonetheless, I now can recommend this movie. However, be aware that the ending of the film leaves everything unresolved. If you buy this, you also will want to purchase the sequel. |

For insomniacs only
|
I purchased this movie based largely on the previously posted rave reviews. After watching the movie once, I was greatly disappointed. I reread those two previously posted raves. I then watched the movie a second time. Now I have to ask: Were those reviewers watching the same movie I saw? In "Temple of the Red Lotus," the story moves at a glacial pace, most of the actors appear to be under heavy sedation, and the martial arts are very lame. The previous reviewer noted that this movie came out about a year before "Come Drink With Me." As Cheng Pei Pei has said, "Come Drink With Me" revolutionized how martial arts are depicted in movies. The fights depicted in older movies like this one pale in comparison; they more closely resemble the stylized faux fighting typical of traditional Chinese opera. Bright spots: It's interesting to see the very young Lo Lieh and Fung Bo Bo shines in every scene in which she appears. |

Very Good Movie
| As a Shaw Brothers movie fan, I rate this movie as of the best classic kung fu movies that Shaw ever made (along with its sequels, "The Twin Swords" and "The Sword and The Lute"). All these three parts are very enjoyable to watch. Besides, the series contains many great casts like, Jimmy Wang Yu, Fung Bo Bo, Ivy Ling Po (in her rare kung fu role). Can't wait for the whole series to be released! |
