Long before “feminism” made it to Hong Kong, women proved themselves more than equal to men in this martial arts classic, The 14 Amazons. The cast is a veritable “who’s who” of the golden age of Shaw Brothers swordplay adventures, and was not only a major box office hit (ranking fourth for 1972), but also a top prize winner, including Best Supporting Actress for Lisa Lu, a special citation for outstanding lead female performance for Lily Ho, Best Director for Cheng Kang, and an award for Honourable Mention For Drama.

The 14 Amazons is a 1972 Shaw Brothers classic, directed by Cheng Gang, who also made the likes of The Sword of Swords and Flying Guillotine 2 for the famous studio. Although perhaps not as well known in the West as other Shaw genre films, The 14 Amazons was a huge success in its day, being one of the top domestic box office earners of the year, and winning multiple awards for acting and directing. With a lavish budget and huge cast of extras for battle scenes, it is certainly one of the better-looking films of the period. It has the feel of a genuine epic, not to mention being action packed enough to remain exciting and thrilling more than thirty years after its initial release. Although the film is packaged as being some kind of feminist romp, it is in fact another tale of the famous Yang family. Set during a time of skirmishes between China and Mongolia, the Yangs heroically defend the border, until traitorous Minister Wang Ching (Cheng Miu, The Water Margin), betrays them to the invading hordes, leading to the death of General Yeh and his seven sons. Every bit as determined to protect their country as the men, the Yang women rise up to take their men's places, led by the general's wife, She Tai Chun (Lisa Lu Yan, The Empress Dowager) and thirteen other widowed women. Despite the protests of Wang Ching, the women take up arms, engaging the invaders in a series of battles before striking deep into the enemy's ranks in an effort to drive them from Chinese soil. The 14 Amazons is not feminist in the traditional cinematic sense, which generally requires women to be assaulted before they fight back. Here, the gender of the characters is far less important than the fact that they are of the Yang family, and embody its noble spirit of self-sacrifice in the face of a greater cause. The film is far from exploitative, and its characters are very much fighters first and women second, barely wasting time with grieving. Also, their quest is not for vengeance, but in the name of their country. As such, the film is imbued with a great sense of heroism and adventure, and though the plot is made up of little more than a series of battles before the traditional showdown, it keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat. This is hampered initially by the fact that there is a bewilderingly large cast of characters, which despite the fact that all are identified when they first appear, are hard to keep track of. Indeed, apart from their names, there is very little to tell the warrior women apart, with little time invested in character development, and all clad in similar attire. Fortunately, the viewer becomes more familiar with them as things progress, if only due to their being killed off at regular intervals. The film is packed with action, both large scale engagements and martial arts duels, and moves along at a rapid pace, pausing only for scenes of tactical discussion. There is a fair amount of blood, most of it bright red, with plenty of decapitations and limb chopping, especially during the final scenes. However, there is no hint of sadism, and the gore is laid on cheerfully enough, being spilt with the best of intentions. Cheng's direction has a flair for the epic, allowing for some sweeping panoramic battle scenes and nicely capturing the glorious scenery. He does include some scenes which border on the wacky, including a human pyramid bridge-building sequence, which at times gives the film the feel of a fantasy adventure rather than a slice of historical drama. However, this sits well with the overall atmosphere of daring heroics, and helps make for rousing viewing. The 14 Amazons should certainly appeal to any Shaw Brothers fans, or anyone who enjoys period-set action, and deserves to be far better known than it is. Whatever reservations the viewer may have about a movie that features actresses like Ouyang Sha-Fei as action heroines (!), the honor, courage, loyalty, and sacrifice on display in "The 14 Amazons" proves to be a powerful and winning formula. Sure, some of the action (including the famous Human Bridge) is simply impossible, yet it is carried off with such elan that I was swept up and cheering for the intrepid Yang family to triumph over those evil Mongols. Lisa Lu, as the Yang's Grand Dame, sets the tone for the film with her regal presence and powerful bearing. Who would want to tangle with her? Ivy Ling Bo gives one of her best action performances, as the family's tactician and field general. Lily Ho is great fun as Ling Bo's willful and immature son. The film's epic scale battle scenes, in which hordes of extras do bloody battle, are handled masterfully. The individual fights are of inconsistent quality; an early fight between bad guy Bolo Yeung and good guy Yueh Hua, for example, is unconvincing, as we clearly see the pugilists missing each other but pretending to make contact. The fights in which the combatants use swords and other weaponry fare much better. With its massive cast, impressive special effects, dramatic plot, Shaw Brothers clearly bet big on "The 14 Amazons" and the gamble paid off. What a stirring spectacle! I recommend it very highly. |

Considering the year this movie was made/released & the technology available, the high impact scenes were impressive. (watergate & human bridge) Being an older film, seeing it remastered is quite the treat. The majesty of every character comes through in the story although I found it difficult to attach myself to any characters due to the slightly overwhelming number involved (common to movies/stories of that magnitude). I definately appreciate this classic over some of the others released in those days that seemed to overwhelm you with number of actors/characters, length of movie & out-rageous plot twists. There did seem to be an overlap in clashing soundtracks at a couple points in the DVD that I couldn't tell if it was merely the orchestration or my unfamiliarity of Chinese music. However, it was not to the point of total disruption or distraction from the show. |

I never had the opportunity to see this film when it was first shown in M'sia. Now I am very happy to have owned the DVD in Sydney. It was certainly a splendid production of Shaw Brothers. Nearly half of Shaws' cast was in the movie, both young and old! The story disclosed unity, courage, loyality and determination of Yang household to defeat the enermy till the end. The scenes of Watergate & Human Bridge were fantastic! Lily Ho portrayed as a cute, naive young amazon, and Ivy acted well in leading the troop.Overall, it's a movie that no one should miss!!! |

Finally, I got the VCD for "The 14 Amazons" last Friday in Singapore. I can't wait to watch the video, I watched this movie 3 times during my school days. This is one of the most successful film directed by Cheng Kang and produced by SB in the 70s. In this movie, Ivy Ling Po and Lily Ho are the main leading cast whom protrayed as mother and son, both ladies have a very excellent performance. Actually, this movie is more than 2 hours, I remembered one part of the movie is Lily Ho who acted as Yang Wen Kwang(Male Role), in order she can follow the Yang troops to fight the enemy, she have to fight and win Yang Pai Mei, acted by Li Ching. If u r Li Ching fans, in this movie, u will be disappointed cos her role is not that outstanding. There are two maginificent scenes in this movie, the HUMAN BRIDGE and the WATERGATE which are so real and fantastic. In this movie, u can see lot of SB young and old actors and actressess, such as Ting Pei, Karen Yip, Wang Ping, Chin Fei, Shu Pei Pei Wang Chin Fung, Yang Ai Wah, Liu Wu Chi, Chen Yen Yen, Yueh Wah, Tsung Wah, Lo Lieh, Chin Pei, Wang Hsia (Singer Wang Jeh's Father), Tien Fung...etc etc. A lot of bloodshed and violent scenes can be seen in this VCD compare to the first time I watch at the cinema, alot of violent scenes is censored. But the blood is too artifical, it looks like tomato sauce to me. If u want to watch SB actors and actressess, this VCD is the best collection. I strongly recommend it for the start in 2006. |

| This is the movie everyone is waiting for. In the cast are so many top stars......there are 2 Asian Movie Queens Ivy Ling Po & Li Ching, Lisa Lu, Lily Ho, Tina Chin Fei, Wang Ping, Betty Ting Pei, Wang Chin Feng, Karen Yip, Liu Wu Chi, Shu Pei Pei, Tsung Hua, Lo Lieh, Paul Chin Pei, Yueh Hua, etc. To Ling Po's credit, she steals the show as Mu Kuei Ying with her tough yet sensitive portrayal of the legendary lady warrior. This classic really lives up to its status and if you are a fan of the Shaw films, you can't afford to miss this one. Celestial has again cast its magic on an old film and transformed it into something quite magical. The picture quality is astounding and even much better than when I first saw it in 1973. |
