Two-time winner of Best Director and Best Screenplay awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards, Derek Yee made The Bachelor's Swan Song his third film as a writer-director after The Lunatics (1986) and People's Hero (1987). The 1989 nuptial comedy stars Yee's then-girlfriend Maggie Cheung opposite popular singer-actor Kenny Bee, with Lydia Shum, Lawrence Cheng, Meg Lam, Wu Fung, Alice Lau, and Shing Fui On rounding out the main cast, plus countless other celebrities showing up in cameo roles. At a time when the "mo-lei-tau" phenomenon was beginning to take Hong Kong's pop culture by storm, the film remained old school and derived its laughs out of everyday situations, winning approval from critics and moviegoers alike.
The story revolves around lovers Nam (Kenny Bee) and Yuk (Maggie Cheung) as they decide to get married after Yuk finds herself pregnant. Unfortunately, all their savings are lost in the stock market, and Nam is forced to borrow from a loan shark to pay for all kinds of wedding expenses. Bad luck won't seem to leave them alone, as the couple has to handle conflicts between the soon-to-be in-laws, troubles in finding a suitable and affordable love nest, and many other problems that arise along the way...

He borrows from a loan shark hoping to cover it with cash gifts from friends. But when Maggie finds her pregnancy is a false alarm, Kenny is angry and tells her about the money. On its eve, the loan shark comes and gets the gift cash. In turn, he is robbed of the money. Then the police need the money as an evidence. That leaves Kenny penniless......
