 Director's & Lead Actor's Biography and Filmography

Director: Bu Wan Cang

Renowned director Bu Wancang's first production with MP&GI, The Bedside Story is a light-hearted comedy about a struggle between a maverick actress (Helen Li Mei) and her stubborn and conservative brother-in-law (Zhang Yang), which represents a debate between individualistic values and family obligations. Apparently the happy enlightenment of Li represents a triumph of the latter over the former. Li, Zhang and Lei Zhen, who plays the role of Li's husband, all showcase their distinctive personalities in their portraits of the characters. Wang Lai's rare appearance as a young urban lady represents a precious moment in her long career well-known for senior roles.

Taming of the Shrew? Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This is a very strange little movie. Li Mei plays a veteran actress with a tawdry past who is willing to do just about anything to further her career. Although she does not love him, she seduces a successful movie director and scriptwriter (Lei Zhen) to marry her. Lei Zhen's brother, an investigative reporter played by Zhang Yang, strongly objects to the marriage and goes about digging up dirt on Li to use as ammunition against her.

Once married, Li Mei forces her husband to sleep in a separate bedroom and spends all of her time out on the town entertaining movie moguls, while her unloved hubby stays home to write scripts for her. Zhang Yang threatens to publish all of the dirt he has dug up on Li if she does not settle down and become a good wife.

I won't give away how the movie ends, except to note that the ending seems forced and not entirely credible. As you can see, YesAsia's description of this film as a "light-hearted comedy" is a bit of a stretch, although the film does contain some comedic elements.

Lei Zhen does a nice job as the clueless husband, Li Mei is convincingly shrewish as the wily actress, and Zhang Yang is effective in his righteously angry role. Also notable is Wang Lai in a very sweet supporting role.

I recommend this film for hardcore fans of these old Cathay films.
