Released two years after its star's suicide, the sequel to the original box office hit becomes all the more moving because of it. Set during World War II, it follows a singer who searches batttle-scarred China for her lover, who is entangled with Japanese invaders, communist insurgents, and a warlord's beautiful daughter. See if you can spot Elsie Tu, the lead's double and a future shaw brothers star, who substituted in scenes completed after Linda Lin Dai's death.

Lin Dai shines!
| This is a superb follow-up to the first movie. Indeed, I found this second installment even more emotionally involving than the first. One sequence in particular stands out for me: Lin Dai's character, alone in her apartment, imagines reuniting with her long lost love, played by Kwan Shan, then flees when Kwan and his relatives arrive. This has to be one of the greatest scenes in all of Chinese cinema. It is a shame that Lin Dai's real life suicide robbed the end of this movie of its emotional wallop. Highly recommended. |

Another Master Piece of Lindai
|
The movie was adapted from the very good book written by Wang Lam and was made with great efforts during the 60'. Overall, it is very good movie inspite of the replacement of Lindai in some parts of the movie after her death in 1964 in order to complete the movie. ( Lindai is just Lindai and is not replacable by any others who might look like her ). The movie was not strong enough at the end, but it show the true love between the couple who were not able to be together when they were in love. and at the time of need, the love still exist and she came back to him when he became disabled. This is the true love that we can hardly find now a day. It takes a little sweetness and sacrifice together to make love significant, I guess. The characters were very clear between good and bad, selfish and sacrifice, conservative and open classified as "Bbue" and "black". the contraction of characters make the movie very dramatic and powerful. Again, another good job done by Celestial Pictures to remaster this piece. We are looking forward to another movie of Lindai " The Love Without End" expect to release in Feb. 2003 and we hope that Celestial Pictures will release average 15 to 20 classic movies of Shaw Brothers each month. hopefully more movies in the years of 50' and 60'. with the excellent teniques to remaster from Celestial Pictures, those movies will be in such a good shape and worth of collection in great values. |
