The Blue and the Black
Often described as Hong Kong's response to Gone With the Wind, this two-part epic, set during the tumultuous years of World War II, won Best Picture at the 1966 Asian Film Festival - months after its luminous star, Linda Lin Dai, had committed suicide. Her poignant performance is immortal, however, as is that of newcomer Angela Yu Chien, who was named Best Supporting Actress. Part I ends with a literal cliffhanger, setting the stage for the equally memorable Part II.
Awards:
The 13th Asian Film Festival:
Best Picture
The 5th Golder Horse Awards:
Honorable Mention for Framatic Feature
Best Supporting Actress(Angela Yu Chien)
- 隨碟附送2003年限量版座^月曆 (精選12幅極具珍藏價值的劇照)
中英字幕、國語發音

Solid melodrama
| "The Blue and the Black" is a beautifully staged, well-acted epic melodrama about life and love in China during the Japanese occupation. Family dynamics are presented realistically and affectingly. Particularly strong are the minor characters in this film; Shaw Brothers had an amazing depth of talent in those days. I must agree with others that Kwan Shan and Lin Dai were a few years too old to be convincing in their roles in this film, but I found Lin Dai's performance, in particular, to be moving. Recommended. |

Charismatic Stars can't play YOUNG
|
For those who were fans of the popular novel, this movie adaptation would be a shock because the movie stars cast in the major characters look and acted way too old, much as I love Lin Dai, she should never have play this role, same with Kuan San --can anybody accept him as a young, naive cry-baby ????? There must be a lack of young male actors at that time to carry a major production like this. I love that song Lin Dai sang in the night club, it has more emotion than the whole movie ! Maybe because it was so similar sounding like that other Lin Dai/ Kuan San "Endless Love"'s theme song. I know, I will remember these two charismatic stars from that movie---coming in February 2003--can hardly wait. |

Beware !!
| Be prepared to be a bit disappointed because Lin Dai did not act in the entire movie(she died before completion), near the end, it was done by a stand-in, otherwise, this film would be near perfect. |
