The Bride From Hell

YesAsia Editorial Description

A precursor to the fabulous horror-romances of eighties Hong Kong Cinema glory, The Bride From Hell is an atmospheric foray into Chinese Ghost Story territory by the visionary Shaw Brothers studios! Yunpeng (Yang Fan) and his servant stay at a country inn one dark evening to escape potential robbers and ghosts. But Yunpeng chances into something far more dangerous! He accidentally happens upon the comely Anu (Xing Hui) naked in bed, and to make up for his rudeness he has to marry her! Because of her beauty, the request is not too difficult to fulfill...until she is introduced to his aunts and uncles, who notice her ghastly green glow and deduce that she's a spirit from the netherworld! But there's something even darker about her appearance, and it may be revenge on his in-laws! Horror, romance, and even a few laughs collide in the aptly-titled Shaw Brothers film, The Bride From Hell!

Never marry a possessed woman … especially one possessed by the spirit of a girl murdered by the uncle of the groom ! That is the moral of this fascinating production , released a full two years before the international success of The exorcist . Justice must be done and an exorcism , HK style , must be performed before anyone can rest in peace . Pretty , talented , Margaret Hsing Hui makes a fetching spirit in this mystery thriller htat also incorporates a laugh of two amidst the chills .

Customer Review of "The Bride From Hell"

Poorly Scripted And Amateurishly Acted Customer Review Rated Bad 3 - 3 out of 10
I suspected this movie was not good as Shaw Brothers's 2 official magazines ( Southern Screen & HK Movie News) did not feature it much in the 70s. But nothing prepared me for this badly-acted and directed movie. Both Margaret Hsing Hui and Yang Fan are not suited for period roles. Both come off awkward and badly in need of more training. Songstress Carrie Ku Mei is also miscast as she is given little to do. Lei Ming who plays one of the villains overacts and hams it up.
The ending of the movie is confusing as the leads act so badly we don't know what emotion they are supposed to express. The usual high production values associated with Shaw Studio are missing as this was shot in Taiwan. The costumes are awful and they look like rejects from other Shaw movies. However this is one of those movies where it's so bad, it's good. Worth a viewing for curiosity sake.....then to be filed away and best forgotten. I am being kind here.
