導演:程剛
Director: Cheng Kang

The seamy side of the Hong Kong film industry is laid bare in The Call-girls. Based on the infamous starlets-for-sex vice scandal that rocked the 1970's movie world, the drama has a startlingly gritty sense of reality in the casting of two of the era's more prominent erotic stars, Chen Ping and Shirley Yu. The scandal arouses the sense of justice of the young cop played by Danny Li (a.k.a. Li Hsiu-hsien), and the movie went on to become a top ten box office hit in 1977.

Lurid exploitation tale Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
"The Call-Girls", told in faux documentary style, purports to expose the ruthless exploitation of young actresses as prostitutes. It tells of a scheme by which attractive women are wooed into the movie business, then forced against their will to sell their bodies. The film suggest that its lurid story is based upon fact.

A good film certainly could be built upon such a premise, but this isn't that film. Instead, "The Call-Girls" tells its tale of the sexual exploitation of young women by ... sexually exploiting young women. The various actresses in the movie doff their duds at the drop of a hat, then the camera lingers over the actresses' naked attributes in a manner calculated solely to titillate the viewer. More bizarrely, several of the scenes in which the actresses are forced to prostitute themselves are played for cheap laughs.

"The Call-Girls" pretends to expose a shocking immorality, but instead chooses to wallow in the immorality it reveals. I might have liked the movie more if it was more honest about its intentions.

Shocking expose on call girls in showbiz! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
At the beginning of this movie, a girl goes around interviewing Shaw stars and directors on their views of prostitution among actresses. We get to see actress Chu Ching, actor Wang Yu, directors Chang Cheuh and Hua Shan among others giving their views. Finally director Cheng Kang is interviewed and the film begins. This lends an air of credibility to the film in its semi-documentary beginning. The actresses who double as prostitutes are given fictitious names to hide their identity except for actress Pak Siu Man, star of Sinful Confession. It is really pitiful to see the amount of stress and duress she was under as she tried to break free. Suicide was the only way out in the end. No particular actress shines in her respective role. In the end, it was very much an ensemble piece. This Celestial release is uncut. So expect lots of nudity.
