Late super star Leslie Cheung made The Cheap Detective in 1982, when he was yet to become a hugely popular icon. In the TV series, he stars as a teenager who wants to establish his own business so desperately that he dares to extort money from his rich father with a fake kidnapping. His father forces him to marry a rich girl (Ngai Sze Pui) but he falls in love with a lounge singer (Yip Yuk Ping) whom his father despises. He turns to his good friends, three "cheap detectives", for help in order to escape from the arranged marriage.
The reality was quite the opposite of what happened in the drama: Leslie Cheung had a crush on Ngai Sze Pui when they first met in another drama before The Cheap Detective. Indeed, she was the only girl whom Leslie Cheung openly admitted to have a courtship with. Now when Leslie Cheung has bid us farewell forever, fans may wish to appreciate his charisma once more in this early work of his.
