A New Direction Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
After her NANA releases OLIVIA comes back and brings her fans a new mini album with 6 new tracks. The album is more along the lines of her inspi’ REIRA (TRAPNEST) releases so if you’re a fan of the music she did for NANA this album isn’t too far of a stretch from that. One thing that I didn’t personally like about the album was the inclusion of “Wish” and “a little pain”. Both songs were already featured on the “OLIVIA inspi’ REIRA (TRAPNEST)” and “NANA BEST” albums. I felt like those 2 songs, even though “Wish” is sung in English, shouldn’t have been included and OLIVIA should have gave us 2 new tracks instead of 2 songs that we’ve already heard. But other than that the album was cohesive and is sung in English and Japanese. “Stars shining out”, Who’s gonna stop it?”, and “If you only knew” were stellar tracks for me. “Dreamcatcher” is personally a skip over track and “Cloudy World” started of interesting but then developed into a typical rock song. “Cut me free” was a disappointing track. In the chorus when she sings “Cut me free” I found it annoying with the high pitch of her voice being sung without any harmonies to coincide with it.
This is an evolved OLIVIA. This album is different from her mini-album tryst and the awesome rock album “The Lost Lolli”. If you favor the darker music she’s released in the past you’ll probably be not too happy with this newer release. The album is more mainstream and pop. It’s not experimental and rockier as her previous releases as just “OLIVIA”, but its wholly inspired by her works under the inspi’ REIRA name. Overall the album was a good pop record and I was intrigued with this new direction she took. If you purchase the CD+DVD album then you’ll be happy to finally watch OLIVIA live in concert at in her “Chocolate & Confusion” (At Shibuya O-WEST) back in ’06. The artwork for the album is equally wonderful when you see OLIVIA’s critter drawings in her special art book included. The photo shoot for the album’s booklet is of course beautiful and artistic. OLIVIA explained in an interview that the 2 doubles of her in the shoot signifies the battle between the mind and the heart. Interesting.
