One of the few Cantonese theater productions to be released English-subtitled on DVD, The Dark Tales is a winning musical from acclaimed playwright Raymond To Kwok Wai (who also wrote Tsui Hark's Peking Opera Blues), and producer Clifton Ko (director of I Have a Date with Spring, also written by Raymond To). Film and television actor Adam Cheng stars as Yuwan, a scholar who has an encounter with the supernatural world. While on the way to college, he meets Tzeyuk (Loletta Lee), a fox spirit who, along with her three sisters, chooses to interact with men for her own amusement. However, the world of man holds some surprises for the mischievous spirits, who must ultimately decide if the world of man is truly for them. While a stage production, The Dark Tales holds many attractions for fans of film, including beautiful costumes and art direction, and a story that recalls the classic supernatural costume films of the late eighties (i.e., A Chinese Ghost Story). Winning Cantonese songs, and the presence of some true film stars, make the stage-set The Dark Tales a different, but no less entertaining experience that can be a real treat for the Hong Kong Cinema fan!

Wish I were there!
| A video recording of a stage musical performance that has its semi modernized-beat, traditional Chinese singing that can be a touch corny if you're not used to this type of music. I had always admired Adam Cheng but he really carried the show! I had no idea what a pleasant singing voice he has but of course I couldn't contain my joy when he brandished a straight sword for a mere instant. There were some great theatre moments & stage actors that I'm sure was a treat to witness live. (wish I had been there) The state of the art "special effects" aren't as special as one would expect but hey...it was live theatre! |

A must see if you are interested in musicals!!

Well, I've watched it 5 times already. Even my wife who doesn't understand Chinese that well loves it. The scores are just incredible. Adam Cheng does an incredible job as expected. Lolita Lee (as a non singer) also does a very admirable job. She is not just a pretty face here. Nice and straight plot, no suprise here. I recommend to all my friends. |

Great Time for the Adventurous
| I took a chance on this stageplay/musical and was well rewarded. The plot is fine (think "Chinese Ghost Story" plus "Green Snake" with a lot of songs), and the music is great. The English subtitles are very good. |

GREAT!!!
| I have not seen this, but I believe that Adam did a great performance cuz I heard some of my friends who did see this. I just cannot wait to see it. Also I'm a fan of Lee Lai Chun so I think I have to buy this whenever I have the money. I'm so jealous about the people who saw this. Very soon I will buy it, so HA HA HA. |
