피터 예이츠의 <디프>는 바다를 배경으로 한 영화들 리스트에서 빠지지 않는 작품이다. 심해에 가라앉은 난파선에 있는 마약과 보물을 찾는 내용으로 거의 절반 가까운 시간이 짙푸른 바다를 보여준다. 영화 역사상 최초의 블록버스터로 손꼽히는 <죠스>의 피터 벤칠리의 원작소설을 영화화한 작품으로 <죠스>에서 카리스마적인 연기를 보여준 로버트 쇼가 다시 한번 터프한 남성 캐릭터에 도전했다. 또한 젊은 날의 닉 놀테와 재클린 비셋이 신혼부부 데이빗과 게일로 각각 연기한다. 많은 시간이 흘렀지만 영화는 지금 보기에도 조금도 어색하지 않는 상당한 수준의 수중장면을 보여주고 있는데 그 이유는 특수효과에 의존하지 않고, 실제 세트 제작을 통한 촬영을 감행한 덕분이다. 깊이 9m, 지름이 36m에 이르는 물탱크 속에 ‘진짜 바다’를 재현하기 위해 엄청난 양의 모래와 물고기들을 집어넣고, 그 속에서 촬영을 진행했다. 여기에 뛰어난 수중 촬영이 결합하면서 매우 그럴싸한 바다장면이 완성되었다. 공을 들인 만큼 수중장면은 볼 만하다. 난파선을 둘러싼 음모와 격돌, 멋진 심해장면, 도나 서머의 감미로운 주제가 등 영화는 즐길 요소들이 많다. <브레이킹 어웨이><머피의 전쟁>등으로 알려진 피터 예이츠 감독이 연출했다.
