Another Nomura masterpiece Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
Ogata Ken stars in "The Demon", a suspenseful and disturbing stunner from director Nomura Yoshitaro. Ogata plays a weak-willed man who marries a woman who inherited a print shop. In the course of managing the print shop Ogata frequently entertained clients at a restaurant, at which he fell in love with a waitress. Eventually he fathers three children with the waitress, diverting funds from the printing business without his wife's knowledge in order to pay the bills of his second family.

When the print shop falls on hard times, the former waitress brings her small children to Ogata's home. After being berated by Ogata's unsympathetic wife, the former waitress dumps the children on Ogata and his wife and leaves, never to be seen again.

Tensions rise between Ogata and his wife as they squabble over what to do with the unfortunate kids. The events which follow go from being heartrending to shocking, as we watch the family's downward spiral.

The performances of all in the cast, including the beautiful little children, are brilliantly nuanced. There is never a false step as the film moves to its horrifying conclusion. It is all believable ... and its very believability is what makes the film so stunningly powerful.

"The Demon" ranks up with "Zero Focus" and "The Village of Eight Gravestones" as one of director Nomura's greatest films. I recommend it very highly to all fans of suspense movies.
