1942年。第二次世界対戦下のオランダはアムステルダム。13歳の少女アンネ・フランクの一家は、反ユダヤ政策の恐怖に怯えていたが、ついにナチスからの"呼び出し"が掛かり、一家は隠れ家生活を余儀なくされることになった。隠れ家で常に恐怖と緊張に囲まれていたアンネだったが、それでも明るさを失わず、誕生日にもらった日記帳に"キティ"という名前をつけ、日々の悩みや苦しみ、希望などを書きつけるようになっていく。やがてアンネは共に隠れ家暮らしをするペーターにほのかな恋心を抱くようになり、精神的な成長を遂げていくのだが、ついに隠れ家がナチスに見つかってしまい…。
