With numerous classics songs, our singing legend Sam Hui also has had a fruitful success in his movie career. "The Dragon from Russia:, which was shot in Russia, is one of his famed titles. Starred as a professional assassin, Sam has done his best with his nimble Kung-Fu skill. Together with the Best actress winnier Maggie Cheung of Festival du Cannes 004, a breathtaking scenario and action sequences, this is undoubtedly one of the Sam Hui's masterpieces.

Professional Review of "The Dragon From Russia"

March 14, 2006

Either the Ed Wood or the Howard Hawks of Hong Kong, Clarence Fok is Tsui Hark without the budgets prising open genre movies and pouring in his infected intellect, sewing them up and unleashing these beautiful Frankensteins on an unsuspecting world. The 800 Dragons are at war with the other secret societies, and when disfigured Master of the Dead tracks his refugee student, Snooker (Dean Shek), down in Russia he steals Maggie Cheung's young love, Yao (Sam Hui), in the bargain.

Lifted off a train Sam is brainwashed and trained to become a hired assassin who will wreak havoc with a foot-long shining steel needle. Recognized by Maggie Cheung while on a job he is assigned to rub her out, and he does. This unfolds against a backdrop of war with a Japanese crime family being taken over by its hired gun, Huntress (Carrie Ng - all lips and pouts and kimonoed cleveage - black ice menace wrapped up in sin, a razor blade in your soft ice cream cone).

Twisting and turning across the screen and off the map these characters disappear and reappear like flickering wraiths. The Chinese diaspora is a world of warring underground societies where missing people and friends sold into servitude by other friends are the order of the day. The wax-faced Master of the Dead is played by choreographer and Seven Little Fortune, Yuen Tak (doubled by Yuen Wah in the train scene), who is fearsomely unleashed in the final reel. Tsui Hark without the budget, Fok's confusing comic book melange has a core of sadness at its heart that is hard to ignore. Amidst the fleeing, fighting figures jumping out of belltowers and slashing one another's throats there is the sound of a man who misses his friends.

One of the last Cinema City films (and a box office flop at that) this is a zarked out tribute to the last of some old style superstars: Cinema City co-founder Dean Shek plays a sober Snooker, legendary pop star and actor Sam Hui is Yao, up-and-coming-but-not-quite-there-yet Maggie Cheung plays May, Yuen Tak makes his screen debut, and Carrie Ng, Loletta Lee and Nina Li play Huntress, Pearl, and Chimer respectively. A perfect popcorn flick, instead of straining to understand this movie, sit back, turn off your brain, and let it wash over you.

Don't bother Customer Review Rated Bad 1 - 1 out of 10
Attractive under the guise of being based on the Crying Freeman comics, there were definately recognizable scenes that paid homage but a far cry from what the comics & your imagination can conjure up. I wasted 90minutes of my life watching this movie, giving it benefit of the doubt, praying it would somehow redeem itself....then wondering why a better actor, (if not better looking) couldn't have been cast considering what a lady-killer the comic character was.

This customer review refers to THE DRAGON FROM RUSSIA
NO ENGLISH SUBTITLES Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Although it clearly says "English Subtitles" on the back of the VCD box, this movie really only has Chinese subtitles. Still, "Dragon from Russia" is a film so action-packed, filled with some of the craziest (yet actually quite well-done) wire-assisted fighting I've ever seen, that it almost doesn't matter... ...Almost.
