浙東水鄉，景色如畫。而此時日本兵攻佔了鎮海。林國一從施家救出了被後媽林德賢強嫁給施傻子的王美雲。發著高燒的美雲被馬浪蕩的姨媽朱寡婦收救並賣到妓院。德軒遇到美雲，救她回到王家埠。德賢、祖善母子再對美雲下毒手，已被父親指婚的國一處處護著美雲，未婚妻定玉幾生醋意。定玉處處耍小心眼，越來越刁鑽。美雲向定玉述說著自己內心的淒苦，定玉聽了有些心動。
貫穿該劇的王美雲、林國一和趙定玉這三位年輕人令人潸然淚下的愛情悲劇，加之小說的“大家族故事”風格，儼然現代“紅樓夢”。
