(3)YesAsia Editorial Description
Forced to flee the Central Kingdom after troops wiped out their village, Guo Jing and his mother settle in the Mongolian grasslands with a tribe led by Genghis Khan. Their quiet life on the steppes is interrupted one day by seven strange masters from the south who have come to take Guo Jing as their pupil. Eighteen years later, Guo Jing (Hu Ge) is now skilled in martial arts, but still every bit as naive and kindhearted as he was as a child. On his masters' orders, Guo Jing leaves the grasslands for the first time and encounters the cute and crafty Huang Rong (Ariel Lin). Together they embark on an epic adventure of myriad dangers and fateful encounters.
The Eagle Shooting Heroes brings together a star-studded ensemble cast from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong including Yuan Hong (The Young Warriors) as Guo Jing's cunning sworn brother Yang Kang, Leung Ka Yan as North Beggar Hong Qigong, Elvis Tsui as the power-hungry Ouyang Feng, and Kathy Chau as Yang Kang's mother Bao Xiruo. The most exciting addition though is probably the casting of acclaimed Hong Kong actor Anthony Wong as eccentric martial arts master Huang Yaoshi.

This is the fourth film I bought from YesAsia, but it really disappoints me. The first 3 films I bought chronologically are "The Spirit of the Sword" [Nicholas Tse, Liu Tek Kai], "Condor Hero" [Huang Xiao Ming, Liu Yi Fei] and "The Book and the Sword" [Adam Cheng, Liu Tek Kai] and my satisfaction kept growing. But then I watch this Lee wok Lap's adaptation of the originally beautiful kungfu series of Louis Cha - I feel angry and sad. Among the above four films, this one is the worst. In general most of the actors/actresses cannot act naturally and some of them, including Hu Ge, overacts their parts so that Guo Jing many times becomes like an idiot. Ariel Lin cannot portrays the Huang Rong you read in the book, either. Additionally, it seems that Lee Kwok Lap likes to dramatize anything whenever possible and dwells in long emotional speeches. The story is at least 35% different from the book. I could not stand watching about seven episodes in Discs 1 & 2, when the director dedicated them just to dramatize the Yang Kang - Wanyan Honglie relationship. With the quality of the fight scenes similar only to 1980s kungfu films and the English translation having a mistake in almost every sentence, I cannot appreciate much of this film. This will be the first and the last Lee Kwok Lap film I watch. But if you love soap operas, you have not read the book or watched any earlier versions of the same film, and you do not mind all the above factors I mentioned, you may still be able to enjoy watching this film. |

I just bought "The Little Fairy" and I dare say that they are the best on-screen couple, better than Hu Ge with Yang Min and Crystal Liu on the Chinese Paladin series. Sure hope to see them together again someday. |

This series got me addicted for weeks! The director did take some artistic license to develop the villains' characters, even offering a different perspective of the Jin Empire, which is an interesting angle by itself. In fact, I think the villains definitely overshadowed the heroes in this show. Yang Kang, Ouyang Ke and Wanyan Honglie were the most fascinating characters in this series and made the likes of good guys like Guo Jing seem kinda bland. That said, Ariel Lin was a wonderful Huang Rong - the only hero in the series whose performance could stand up against these fascinating villains. And what an interesting take on the Yang Kang character - the poor guy has a seriously messed up family, no thanks to his mother's (Bao Xiruo) deadly beauty which seriously screwed up his upbringing and personality. Real tragic character. He's damned if he joins the Songs and equally damned if he joins the Jins. Forced to be with the Jins in the end because of a powerful crown prince who's obsessed with being his dad. At least his son, Yang Guo, didn't have such a messed up identity crisis. |

This is about the DVD set itself, not the series
|
For all those who were looking forward to experiencing the Legend of the Condor Heroes 2008 in pristine, DVD-quality audio and video, I'm sorry to say but this DVD set is very much lacking in that part. The video quality of the drama is VCD-like, watchable but there are inevitably better video files of this drama available online for free. The main reason why I purchased this set was to obtain the Cantonese dub of the series, for which I am most pleased with, but the English subtitles are, as always, extremely hilarious. When I first got this set I thought that at the very least it should be on par with the Return of the Condor Heroes that was released in 2006. Oh, how wrong I was. At least for that set, a 50 episode series was put onto 9 discs. For this series, for some reason or another, they squeezed it onto 7 discs which has had major effects on the quality of the video that is left behind. If I could re-do this one decision in my life, I'd wait until Netflix had it available to rent and get it from them. Taiseng really did this series an injustice by sacrificing quality for the sake of saving a few pennies on discs. |

I will always compare this series with the original 80s TVB version with Felix Wong and Barbara Yung. What I did find very interesting about this new update was how certain characters were given more attention. Particularly Ouyang Ke (歐陽克) as you can see that he wasn't an evil person. If you watch it all the way to the end, without major spoilers, if you already know the main story and were expecting something to happen...it doesn't. If you like seeing Ariel Lin and Hu Ge together, then I also recommend also watching The Little Fairy aka: Fairy From The Wonderland (天外飛仙) as they are also the two leading characters. The martial arts and fighting are good though i liked the recent Return of Condor Heroes more. Also there is more "babe" factor with the actresses in other recent releases of this genre. Overall though, I still recommend this to add to your watch list if you are a Jin Yong and Wuxia fan. |
