YesAsia Editorial Description

Editor of films like My Dear Enemy, Evil Twin, and Don't Look Back, Kim Hyung Joo makes his directorial debut with the oddball romantic comedy The ESP Couple. Rising stars Jin Goo from Truck and Park Bo Young from Speedy Scandal are thoroughly charming as the film's bickering odd couple with paranormal powers. On top of the cute romance and wacky comedy, there's also some crime action thrown in, ensuring that there's never a down moment in The ESP Couple!

College student Su Min (Jin Goo) gets into more than he bargained for when he saves a high school girl (Park Bo Young). The girl, Hyun Jin, turns out to be one cute and curious ball of trouble when she catches scent of the fact that Su Min has special powers, something that he'd like to keep a secret. Hyun Jin begins tagging after Su Min to dig out the truth, leading to many hilarious mishaps as she tries to test him. Su Min has no choice but to face up to his powers and his budding feelings for Hyun Jin when the two of them stumble on a kidnapping case.

Professional Review of "The ESP Couple (VCD) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)"

March 9, 2009

This professional review refers to The ESP Couple (DVD) (Korea Version)
ESP Couple marks the debut of editor Kim Hyung Joo, who previously worked on the likes of My Dear Enemy, Evil Twin and Don't Look Back. Perhaps unable to choose exactly a genre, Kim instead decided to combines elements from several, and as a result although ostensibly a romantic comedy, the film also works in science fiction and kidnap thriller elements. Although this may sound a little strange, this odd approach actually works in the film's favour, since the last thing viewers really need is yet another cute Korean Sassy Girl clone.

The plot follows Su Min (Jin Goo, recently in serial killer thriller Truck), a college student who keeps his psychic powers a secret, living a quiet, lonely life. One day at an art gallery he is accosted by a strange girl called Hyun Jin (Park Bo Young, Speedy Scandal) who insists on following him around. After an incident in the park involving an undercover police attempt to arrest a kidnapper gives her a display of his abilities, she attaches herself to him, determined to find out exactly what he is capable of. Needless to say, his feelings for his gradually change from annoyance to romantic yearning, though she herself appears to be hiding a secret of her own.

ESP Couple really is quite bizarre, with a meandering plot that basically jumps from set piece to set piece as Hyun Jin drags Su Min between daft situations, such as trying to use his powers to get them a free lunch or to attempting to read the minds of strangers to find out if they have ever been rock climbing. However, Kim holds things together thanks to an intriguing undercurrent of mystery as to exactly who Hyun Jin really is and what her motivations for driving Su Min might be. Although most experienced viewers will have likely guessed the big twist long before the final act thanks to a series of increasingly obvious hints, it works well and manages to tie all the loose ends together quite nicely.

In terms of both romance and comedy, the film is surprisingly, though pleasingly low-key. Although the relationship between Hyun Jin and Su Min builds in predictable fashion and is hampered by its inevitability, it never feels forced, and Kim stops short of allowing unbelievable full love to blossom. As such, it is all the more convincing for it, thanks in part to charming performances from both Park Bo Young and Jin Goo, and the film is genuinely quite touching towards the end in a manner which makes the final twist far easier to swallow. Similarly, the film is amusing throughout, though in deadpan fashion, with little in the way of over the top slapstick or tiresome pratfalls. Kim derives most of the humour from the strange situations which the characters end up in, and as such ensures that the laughs never detract from the plot.

Visually the film is quite impressive, with Kim representing Su Min's psychic powers through strange flickering images, blurring and shaky camera work, all of which is effective without being over the top. As might be expected from an editor turned director, he keeps the film tight and well paced, and clocking in at only an hour and twenty minutes it never outstays its welcome. He does employ a variety of different techniques and styles that help to keep the film interesting, though in controlled fashion and without ever lapsing into the kind of forced stylishness that so many first time directors are prone to. Also in the film's favour is the fact that Kim shies away from too many mock cute touches, saving it all for one long, silent animated explanatory sequence near the end, which actually works very well.

As such, ESP Couple is short and sweet, and although it does end a little abruptly, is one of the few films of its type to leave the viewer wanting more. Sufficiently different to stand out from the crowd, it delivers charmingly entertaining viewing that successfully mixes a variety of genres to wacky, though surprisingly coherent effective. Having shown himself to be an eccentric talent, it will be interesting to see what director Kim Hyung Joo turns his hand to next, though it is certainly hoped that he will continue down such a creative and oddball road.

Ok.... Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
It's not a movie that you would want to watch again.

The story is ordinary and i don't think that the main characters look good together. They are not bagay. I suggest if you want to watch this film, borrow from a friend.

A Wonderfully Charming Movie Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Although having fascinating subject matter (something I was into once, UFO’s, ESP, coincidences etc.) it’s the charm, humor and light romance that’s its key feature here and utterly endearing. Little actress Bo Young Park as the bundle of joy here is absolutely wonderful for one (in fact she could be a little Wonder Girl) and charismatic in her cheeky banter and methods of getting Su Min (Gin Gu) to do her bidding. Young K-fans should certainly be won over by Bo Young here, no doubt. Although the front promotional art cover photo may suggest a bit of crazy comedy type with wacky high jinks and the like, this is far from that type of film. It’s quite placid in fact and even though having kooky comedy here, you could almost relax and meditate to its charm and pacing. There’s also a nice animation sequence bridging the final moments.

The story is quite simple about a young man with ESP abilities who meets a young schoolgirl in an art gallery who takes a shine to him. The girl understands that Su Min has ESP abilities, and although he can ‘see’ other people’s thoughts he cannot actually read the girl’s mind. Su Min is a bit reluctant to have the girl follow him around and at times tries to break away from her, but the girl uses innocent blackmail tactics to keep them together. Mainly the film features these two characters with the girl getting Su Min to do her bidding; to eat at a posh restaurant, visit a zoo and also try to convince Su Min that he needs a girl friend. She also gets Su Min to test out his ESP, too, with humorous results. There is a bigger reason for her motives, but I wont say more as to spoil the plot outcome. But aside to the cheeky charm, there’s additional plot about a kidnapped girl who the police are trying to track and where the girl and Su Min become somewhat involved. The bumbling and quite charismatic police team are good, but unfortunately under used though. This kidnap mystery will seem predictable, but doesn’t really spoil the nice ambiance and charm of this film. I say charm, it does get a wee bit violent near the end stopping this film being an overall family movie.

Very easy going, pleasantly cute movie in a Disney type of way. It’s quite short at 1 hour 20 mins, but perfect timing for the type of story here. It also feels like a pilot episode for a crime solving TV drama series I thought (I’m only speculating here). Simple uncluttered story and a charming (ESP) couple here with a happy ending, too (awwe).
