　　清光緒六年，醫藥世家白府與官宦世家詹府結下深仇，百年老號《百草廳》老藥鋪被查封，全府陷入絕境。老太爺白萌堂悲憤交加，與世長辭，全府重擔落在了二兒媳白文氏身上。三爺白穎宇乃紈姱子弟，使白家支離破碎。白文氏於內外交困之中運疇帷幄，費盡心機終將老號盤回，一舉成為白府的當家人。然而，白文氏卻管教不了兒子白景琦，他從小頑劣無可救藥，後終被文武雙全的老師季宗布所降服，長大成人充滿了憤世嫉俗的反叛精神，竟與仇家詹府的私生女黃春私訂終身。

　　一九○○年，八國聯軍侵入北京，三爺穎宇當了漢姦，可是表妹白雅萍卻被鬼子輪姦。景琦對侵略軍充滿仇恨，與一反戰日兵結為好友，後又為了給老師季宗布報仇，殺死了一個德國兵，連闖大禍，在三爺穎宇的威脅下，白文氏不得不將景琦和已懷孕的黃春趕出家門。景琦攜妻黃春闖蕩濟南，創下一番事業，卻又因與名妓楊九紅的感情糾葛得罪提督大人，被下大獄，後被堂姐白玉芬救出。京城白府也是一波三折，無賴韓榮發混入白府訛詐，氣死了穎軒二爺。

　　一九一一年清朝覆滅，大宅門在軍閥混戰中日漸沒落，白家子女不肖，景琦之子白敬業揮霍無度，在三老爺白穎宇的唆使下，幹盡壞事……九一八事變後，東北藥材禁運，老號“百草廳”斷了貨源，面臨危機，楊九紅出關運貨將藥運回，攙救了老號的危急。楊九紅去東北期間，景琦與丫頭香秀好上了，楊九紅悔之不及，將一腔怒火發泄在另一丫頭槐花身上，致使槐花懸梁自盡，使景琦惹上了官司。而景琦的管家王喜光做惡多端，被景琦逐出府門，他懷恨在心落井下石，將景琦送入大獄。機智的香秀上下周旋，終將景琦救出，景琦決心要娶香秀……

　　七七滬溝橋事變，景琦長孫白佔元參加了共產黨的抗日組織，白家大宅門卷入了轟轟烈烈的抗日洪流中。

Best real life drama ! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I loved the series for its complexcity that this family has to deal with between keeping the business running and betraying the communist government. The director portrait the main character as a tough boss that has to take very difficult decision to his dark sense of humor to break away from the drama. This serie is definitely worth the time and the while to watch.

the story is well written and all the actors did a wonderful job. i loved watching it and trying to copy their accents!
