YesAsia Editorial Description
The unstoppable trio of Stephen Chow, Ng Man Tat, and writer-director Lee Lik Chi ruled Hong Kong Cinema in the 1990s with blockbuster comedies like Flirting Scholar, God of Cookery, and The King of Comedy, but their golden collaboration actually began in television. In 1989, they collaborated in two extremely popular TVB dramas, the nonsensical martial arts comedy The Final Combat and urban drama The Justice of Life, launching Stephen Chow into great fame. One of TVB's most classic series, The Final Combat was Chow's first drama as a leading man, and an early forerunner of the riotous period spoofs and motormouth "mo lei tau" humor that would later become his box-office signature. The Final Combat was so popular at the time, Chow's catchphrases in the drama became common colloquial expressions in Hong Kong.
Comedy king Stephen Chow stars as mouthy accidental hero Duan Fei, the capricious and cowardly son of an esteemed martial arts master. Weathering worldly dangers through quick wit and dumb luck, Fei vastly prefers afternoon tea over martial arts duels, but somehow he gets pulled into the center of an epic battle of good versus evil that could bring down the entire martial arts world. Chow's frequent sidekick Ng Man Tat works double in two different roles - a deadly serious swordsman and a villainous transsexual! Also an acclaimed film actor now, Francis Ng is in full-on evil overacting mode as Chow's duplicitous adopted brother who jumps to the dark side in his quest for power.

Funny in the Beginning.
| This series has a nice music, and I love the intro. The beginning part of the story is hilarious and very exciting, and Stephen Chow is a very good actor. The problem is later on...there are a lot of plot holes. Many things happen that make you think, "Gee...how convenient. How'd HE end up there? At that EXACT time?" So...all in all, this series is probably only worth it for the beginning. 9 for the beginning. |

Great Movie..but...vcd...
Great Movie..but...vcd...
| I loved this movie since I saw it when I was little. It was absolutely hilarious. Steve Chow did such a great job in this tv series. I really liked scenes with him and Yammie Lam .... just ashamed the storyline was not written so that they would end up with each other. In terms of the vcd set. I'm just wondering if anyone who has purchased this vcd set can tell me if, this, like all other tvb vcds, is the cut version. Meaning, is this vcd version not the complete movie? I'm guessing it's the version where directors slash the movie to bits, and cut out good parts of the series. I could never understand why TVB does this. I mean viet dubbed tvb serials are released in its complete original form and it's released in DVD format. Such a shame that the original Honk Kong producers don't do it that way. So people who speak viet actually have a better deal when purchasing TVB tv serials. This is an insult to the Hong Kong film industry and its actors, not to mention the customers who are cheated out of their purchase!! |

worth seeing
| I bought this series because I am a fan of Stephen Chow. It is not a funny movie but it is worth seeing , especially someone like me who wants to see what Stephen's work was like when he started. I like his other funny series better but this one is adequate and heart warming to see how Sing's character develops |

Comical Milestone
|
TVB hit a milestone with this hilariously ambitious series. Set in historical China, the writers for this ridiculous story took a chance by adding modern humor to it. This could have resulted in catastrophy, instead, it became an instant classic. Though the plot isn't a new one, it manages to shine thanks to the appointed king of comedy, Stephen Chow. His infamous line for peace "Let's sit down, sip some tea, have a bun, and talk it over" probably, in no little way, helped launched him into overnight stardom. Apart from the humor, the show does have a lot of heart to it. The development of characters and story are well gaged and believable. There was just enough humor to the series to compliment the serious aspects. This is a great lighthearted series to check out. I wouldn't recommend it for those looking for something focused on martial arts, as the action in this one is admittedly weak, but I would recommend it for those looking for a good laugh. |
