It was only a few weeks ago that I stumbled upon Galneryus by virtue of the fact that their cover art is done by renowned artist Yoshitaka Amano. My attention was caught, and I sought out a few samples of their songs. Moments later, I had ordered BOTH of their currently published albums. I'm probably not typically known as a "Power Metal" guy, but Galneryus completely blew me away with their intense instrumentation, and I've been listening to their albums on my way to work completely to the exclusion of all else. At the risk of being accused of blasphemy, I might even say that I've come to enjoy Galneryus more than X-Japan. Normally, I'm not a guy who cares one way or another about lyrics, but Galneryus seems to the exception. The lyrics are actually all in English... well, almost English, if you know what I mean. Strangely, the occasional odd grammar seems to make the lyrics all the more memorable. There's a certain quality to the lyrics which really grabs me: every line seems to powerfully convey a sense of "noble confidence" (as one songs puts it). In much the same way that I recommend Malice Mizer's "Bara no Seidou" to anyone who is a fan of Castlevania's more gothic tracks, I recommend Galneryus to anyone who loves the classic metal style which also characterizes the series. The Flag of Punishment or Advance to the Fall? I'd say do what I did: get both. I doubt you'll be disappointed. It's been a long time since I've had a band so suddenly and forcefully make its way onto my "awesome" list. |
