YesAsia Editorial Description

Actor-turned-director Kent Cheng made A Fortune Code in 1990, pooling together the hottest stars at that time, including Canto-pop godfather Alan Tam, top star Andy Lau, action hero Sammo Hung, and the late diva Anita Mui. Like all the other films released during Chinese New Year, A Fortune Code amuses the audience with plenty of funny jokes and hilarious action sequences.

The story is set in China during the Sino-Japanese War, when some patriotic overseas Chinese have raised US$400,000 to support the Chinese army. A person nicknamed Mammon, whose real identity remains unknown, is the only one on earth who knows the password for withdrawing this sum from the Swiss Bank. Mammon accidentally gets caught by the Japanese army and sent to a concentration camp, but fortunately no one there recognizes him as the key to a huge sum of money. Our great hero, played by none other but superstar Andy Lau, sets out to identify Mammon in Concentration Camp No. 732...

How Smart Is Your Parrot? Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This movie has a little bit of everything...action, comedy, history, nationalism, love story...and it has some great actors, too. It is situated in a Chinese prison camp and centered around the search for the "God of Fortune" who has the code to a wealthy account in a Swiss bank that will save China from the hands of the Japanese. But of course he dies before he can give out the code...but don't worry because a parrot knows all and can have a responsive conversation. (This is where is get a little fantastical, but not too much so that the movie falls apart.) So now they must capture the bird and escape from the camp...no problem...On the action front, there are a few sceens that were fun to watch, though nothing for the record books. The underlying relationship between Andy and Anita was nice, but underdeveloped. The comedic parts were most memorable to me, and were well done. Additionally, I liked the change of pace from the typical plot lines I have watched so often. So overall I would recommend this film to anyone who just wants to relax and not have to think too hard, but is tired of the same old plots.
