YesAsia Editorial Description

Director Chang Cheh brings a socially-conscious edge to his usual kung-fu bloodshed in The Generation Gap, another fine pairing of stars David Chiang and Di Lung! Ling Xi (David Chiang) is a rebellious youth whose liaison with underage girlfriend Cindy (Agnes Chan) is the spark which lights the eventual flame of his rebellion. Against the wishes of her parents, Ling Xi and Cindy move in together, and the two find a measure of bliss in their shared life. However, rumors circulate that Ling Xi is using Cindy as a means of financial support. After his brother Ling Zhao (Di Lung) returns Cindy to her parents, Ling Xi is branded an outcast. His anger only leads to spiraling bitterness, and finally employ in a triad gang which gives him the ability to release his frustration - which he does until the bitter end. Bloodshed and gritty kung-fu action coexist with a thoughtful, compelling screenplay in The Generation Gap, one of the more unusual, but no less worthy entries in Chang Cheh's stunning library of Shaw Brothers classics.

Acclaimed film director Chang Cheh gives Shaw Brothers a contemporary facelift with his gangster/ generation gap melodrama acting duo of David Chiang and Ti Lung. While the action created by Shaw’s most successful fight directing pair of Liu Chia-liang (a.k.a. Lau Kar-leung) and Tang Chia will bowl you over, it’s Chiang’s award winning and dynamic presence that steals the show, revealing how youthful growing pains created by square adults can end in gangsterism and death.

What were they thinking? Customer Review Rated Bad 3 - 3 out of 10
"The Generation Gap" is an almost unspeakably awful movie, a film that only could have been made in the late 60s or early 70s. It is filled with the silliness of that era, in which youthful whims are deemed wisdom and parental maturity is seen as tyranny.

David Chiang does his usual young rebel schtick. Agnes Chan was a very weird choice for the female lead. She appears to be about 12 years old, cannot act, and, if that is her voice we hear singing the movie's inane songs, she couldn't sing either. Frankly, imagining Chiang and Chan as boyfriend and girlfriend shacking up together is downright creepy.

Oh, and the fine actors cast as parents simply look uncomfortable throughout.

"The Generation Gap" is an embarrassing relic from a blessedly bygone era.

David Chiang is as usual and Anges Chan is always so rigid in her acting. Fighting scenes can be seen in the last 20 minutes.
