The Ghost And The Darkness - Fantastic Movie -and-

When I saw The Ghost And The Darkness in a theatre, I was blown away by the picturization and gripped by the terror of the predators. The sound effects were wonderful and when the lions roared, the audience would get a real scare. The DVD delivers the same great sound in Dolby Digital 5.1, though I wish this great sound experience could be made available in a DTS 5.1 mix as well. Still, the Dolby Digital mix is extremely satisfying. Nice job Deltamac on this front! However, the DVD does not deliver satisfactorily in terms of video transfer or picture quality. First of all, the DVD-case and the YESASIA site incorrectly state that the DVD is Widescreen 2.35:1---this makes one think that they have done an anamorphic transfer. But in reality, the DVD is not anamorphic or widescreen-enhanced. Instead, it is framed inside 4:3 screen area in a letterbox mode (with black bars on top and bottom, and in between the black bars, the movie is shown in the theatrical aspect ratio---Both Deltamac and YESASIA should make these corrections). Also, the overall picture is somewhat dim. The contarst seems to have suffered. The movie itself is a grand experience worthy of 10/10 rating. Val Kilmer impresses as the officer and the hunter and Douglas does a good job in the role of a professional hunter. The African landscape is beautifully captured. Lately, and Indian movie, KAAL, lifted some scenes and some concept from this movie. My 7/10 rating is only because of average picture quality, non-anamorphic mode, and misleading caption of "widescreen" on the DVD case published by Deltamac. |
