With her elegant classic persona, Li Li-hua was the ideal performer for period aristocratic and imperial roles. The Goddess Of Mercy is a good example of her strong empathy and noble presence. The youngest daughter of a brutal king, the princess openly disapproves of the floggings and cruel treatment her royal family heaps on the peasants. As a result, the heartless king turns on his own daughter forcing her into exile. This humanistic tale will inspire and hearten even the most cynical viewer.

Epic cinematic entertainment Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"The Goddess of Mercy" reminds one of those splashy biblical epic films, like Cecil B. DeMille's "The Ten Commandments". It is a sweeping, big budget extravaganza, with immense battle scenes, superb cinematography, sumptuous costuming and gorgeous set decoration. "The Goddess of Mercy" definitely is a feast for the eyes. Surprisingly, Shaw Brothers entrusted this huge production to two Korean directors (including the great Shin Sang-Ok) and cast two Korean actors in lead roles in the film. Li Lihua stars as Princess Miao Shang, a kind of Buddhist Moses who leads a captive people to freedom in a land of milk and honey. Indeed, Miao Shang is so much like Moses that we even have a scene similar to the parting of the Red Sea, except here the prayers of Miao Shang lead to the appearance of a magic bridge by which the fleeing captives escape the evil emperor's onrushing army. Li Lihua does a fine job as the kind-hearted princess, but her role is a bit one-dimensional. Yes, we see her grow ever more self-sacrificing as the film progresses, but we never see her in doubt; a little nuance in the storytelling would have deepened her character. Creating a more lasting impression is the Korean actor Kim Seung Ho as her father, the evil emperor. He chews up the scenery with larger-than-life relish. You won't learn much about Buddhism by watching "The Goddess of Mercy", but you will be entertained in grand style. Highly recommended.

The goddess of mercy Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Not so much about religion but more emphasis on good morale. This movie related the sacrifices by Kwan Yin prior her attainment as the goddess of mercy. Li Li Hwa was definitely the right choice for her role due to her elegance and maturity. Worthy watching.
