省城學生方賀生（馬景濤）為完成病重母親玉卿（南紅）的心願而與謝秀巧（陳秀雯）一個外柔內剛的農家女兒結婚，卻未能忘情於戀人張文鳳（鄧萃雯）。革命巨浪如洪流湧至，生毅然從軍參加北伐。天意弄人，兩人同懷有生骨肉。巧深信鳳所懷的確是生之骨肉，於是在危急關頭挺身相救，並把她帶進方家；鳳雖心存感激，但倔強與妒恨令她仍視巧為情敵。期間巧為保鳳胎兒而不慎令自己小產，鳳終誕下一女，鳳深覺內疚，與巧化敵為友。巧好友治安廳長之女石佩佩（商天娥），屈服於父命，委身下嫁軍閥作妾並誕下一子，因時局動盪，慘遭遺棄，只好投靠方家，並下嫁生之父親方世藩（秦沛）作填房。亂世中，方家得知生戰死沙場，唯巧仍深信生仍在生會與之重聚，覆行他的諾言。原來生受了重傷，以致失憶。軍護丁敏（邵美琪）一直在生旁照顧，二人因此產生深厚感情。最後生與巧街中重逢，究竟一生最愛誰屬……。

BEST series
| This series has been the best out of my tv watching career life. The series itself does not have any boring scenes or wasted scenes, it is very touching and emotional which expresses the values of both traditional and modern society yet it is set at a transitional period in Chinese history. It is a worthwhile product and in terms of cost it is a bargain as to what will be gained by watching this series! |

Excellent
| I have been waiting for this series for so long....!!! I am so glad it is finally released. The quality is fantastic, esp it is in DVD format. Amy Chan's character is the best and I love to watch every scene she is in. The other characters are great too, esp it is such a long series, but no boring sessions. I cannot wait for the final one to be issued. It is worth keeping. |
