YesAsia Editorial Description

Shaw Brothers studios' Huangmei Operas don't get more epic or cinematically lavish than The Grand Substitution, a musical costume epic that was crowned Best Picture at the 12th Asian Film Festival. With China under control of a weak Emperor, two officials compete to steer the future destiny of the land. Chiu believes the people are the future of China, while the diabolical Tu wishes to grind the people beneath an iron heel. Tu decides to take out Chiu's family, but one lone infant escapes. With that infant lies the hope of the fallen Chiu family, and perhaps even the future of China. Double-crosses, epic battles, tragic romances, and royal palace intrigue combine to make The Grand Subsitution one of the most dramatic and exciting Huangmei Operas in the Shaw Brothers library. Starring Li Li Hua, Yan Jun, and Ivy Ling Bor, in a cross-dressing, gender-bending role.

  導演嚴俊演而優則導,拍出史詩式氣魄。
Winner of Best Picture in The 12th Asian Film Festival, this grand "Huangmei opera" is considered one of the best of the genre. Lavishly shot in Eastmancolor and Shawscope, with an unparalleled cast, the sublime story included royal princesses, a decades-long romance, palace betrayals, battle, intrigues, and, of course, a little gender-bending just to spice up the plot. So expressive was the film's libretto that it actually vied with rock and roll for popularity amongst Asian audiences.

Another Magnificent Film By Shaw Bros!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
An excellent libretto with wonderful and talented cast, well-earned painstaking plot, beautiful costumes and songs......etc! Say no more, a Huangmei movie no one should miss! Bravo! Yen Chun, who acted and directed brilliantly. Lili Wah and Ivy Ling Po's roles as mother and son gave me heartfelt sadness and tears. Again, Ivy had stolen the show in the end. She portrayed her part extremely well as a very handsome, cute, naive, lost prince of Lili Wah. I have seen it 3 times and will definitely watch it again and again in future.

Excellent....acting....plot...music...costume... Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
First class acting all round. Can we please have more Li Lihua movies released? Am getting very annoyed with both Shaw and Cathay for "refrigerating" her movies.....WHY??

Emotional....great acting.. Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Yes, this is undoubtedly one of Shaw's best huangmei diao drama. The acting from everyone is superb and the plot moves briskly and non-dragging. Excellent deep-felt emotions exuded from veteran stars Li Lihua, Yan Jun, and young versatile Ling Po, not to forget Li Ting and the other old-timers.

Loyalty such as shown by Cheng Yin would be unheard of in present times but devout loyalty is the theme of this intensified emotional drama. Loved the costume, the dialog and the songs.

Great Performances Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This film won Ivy Ling Po the "most versatile talent" award at the Asian Film Festival. Young actress Li Ting who committed suicide shortly after this movie also turned in an unforgettable performance. They are ably supported by the husband & wide team of Li Li Hua & Yen Chun. Absolutely one of the best Shaw movies ever, this comes highly recommended.

Good Shaw Classic Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
During the frenzy and competitive era of huangmei operas in the sixties, this is one of the better Shaw classics, with a good and interesting storyline, excellent performances from Li Lihua, Yan Jun, LingBo and a familiar talented supporting team of Cheng Yanyan, Yang Zhiqing, Jingmiao, Li Ying, etc., not forgetting the outstanding performance of young actress Li Ting. This film is deserving of its 12th Asian Film award for Best Picture. Regrettably this is a mono sound system as a stereo soundtrack would render more excitement and intensity to the drama.
