張三皮（梁醒波）的「南發」洋服鋪隔鄰，開了另一家叫「北大的同類型商鋪，老闆李四寶（劉恩甲）是上海人，恰好又是家裡新搬來的鄰居。李的女兒翠華（丁皓）是空中小姐，興廣東館的機師麥永輝（張清）熱戀。來自上海的機上乘客王文安（雷震）欲追求翠華，但登門造訪後卻愛上了張的女兒麗珍（白露明）。這兩對青春兒女的愛情遊戲，後因語言、文化和生活習慣上的差異，而變得複雜與糾纏……
本片集合了南北國、粵語片的演員（露明和張清都屬「電戀」的粵語片組），同時出現了國語與廣東話對白，在當年國、粵語影壇乃屬創舉，再加上是喜劇，所以立即造成哄動，映期長達數月。影片反映出本地居民與南來北人的種種分歧，但在雙方的良好意願下，卻得以打破隔膜，和諧共處，是香港社會逐漸發展出自己的獨特身份的一重要過程。梁醒波和劉恩甲兩大諧星獻技縱橫，擦出火花﹗影片的成功促成了兩部續集《南北一家親》和《南北喜相逢》的誕生。
Featuring a popular cast from the Mandarin and Cantonese cinema, this outstanding comedy was a huge box office succes in the early 60's and span two official sequels, not to mention tens of imitations, subsequently. The Odd Couple of the film are the Cantonese speaking Liang Xingbo and the Mandarin speaking Liu Enjia. Not only are they business rivals but they also share the same apartment. However, dialect and cultural differences keep the two tailors constantly at war. Meanwhile, Liu's darghter(Ding Hao) falls in love with a Cantonese pilot and Liang's daughter (Bai Luming) plans to marry a Shanghainese. The infuriated father decide to interfere....

Good old days
| I miss watching Leung Sing Bo's wittiness and comedies so this movie is very entertaining to me. Also, very happy to listen to Cantonese as it should be spoken (in the good old days). Another collector's item. |

A truly great comic film

"The Greatest Civil War on Earth" is regarded as one of the all-time classics of Chinese cinema and it amply deserves that status. It is a hilarious, charming and heart-warming tale. The great Leung Sing Po stars as a Cantonese tailor who is outraged when a Northern, Mandarin-speaking tailor (played by the equally superb Liu Enjia) opens a shop immediately next to his own. His outrage is compounded by the unorthodox competitive tactics adopted by the Northerner, and then practically causes him to burst when he learns that the Northerner has moved into the same flat in which he resides. The rivalry between the dueling tailors reaches absurdly epic proportions. The movie is topped off with the comic romances of the two gorgeous daughters of the two tubby tailors. What makes this film such a classic is that its themes of envy, of prejudice, and of the immigrant experience (and of reactions to immigrants) are universal. No matter where you reside on this planet you will find an embarrassing part of yourself on display in this spluttering, boiling, thoroughly outrageous comic gem. Very, very highly recommended. |

Enchanting Tale of Dialect WAR !!!!

GREATEST CIVIL WAR ON EARTH stands only in the Hongkong film world as the first film to use both Mandarin and Cantonese simultaneously to great effect (provided of course, if you knew and understand both), it is a delightful comedy of manners, of prejudices and of course, of extreme situations--the quartet of charming young actors-Ding Hao and Cheng Ching, Bai Luming and Lei Chen almost dimmed in the crazy antics of the two chubby daddies-Leong Sing Po and Liu Un Chia, even a pair of kids had their moments in this wonderful comedy. This successful proved once more that Cathay Studios has always been the studio that comes up with the most innovative and imaginative entertainment--let us see the two sequels soon, I am waiting to see what other crazy happenings befall the two families! |
