YesAsia Editorial Description

During a civil war in 16th-century feudal Japan, two cowardly farmers (Minoru Chiaki and Kamatari Fujiwara) stumble upon Makabe (Toshirô Mifune), a fierce army general. Escaping from hostile territory, General Makabe embarks on a mission to rescue both Yukihime (Misa Uehara), the willfull princess of his ruling house, and the royal fortune. In the selfish hopes of finding the gold, the two misfits accompany the hardened soldier through dangerous mountain passes. In addition to its status as one of Akira Kurosawa's finest films, THE HIDDEN FORTRESS is especially notable for its influence on director George Lucas's STAR WARS. Lucas admittedly borrowed much from Kurosawa's lighthearted epic; the two bickering misfits were the inspiration for R2-D2 and C-3PO, while Princess Leia was largely patterned after the feisty Lady Yukihime. Both Luke Skywalker and Han Solo contain elements of General Makabe, but neither character matches Mifune's disciplined ferocity.

"...[The film] blends intimate characterisation with vast vistas....The CinemaScope cinematography lends sweep..." - Jamie, Russell (Film Critic), Total Film, 03/01/2002

Great Kurosawa gem Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"The Hidden Fortress" combines action and comedy with master director Akira Kurosawa's special genius to produce a very memorable film. Toshiro Mifune commands the screen with his overpowering physical presence, which is not easy to do in a film that shuns close-ups in favor of wide shots.

The film is set during one of Japan's seemingly unending series of civil wars. Misa Uehara plays a 16 year old princess trapped behind enemy lines who is assisted by her loyal general (Toshiro Mifune) in attempting to return to her realm to rebuild it from the ashes. Along for the ride are two squabbling peasants, hilariously played by Minaru Chiaki and Kamatari Fujiwara. This pair swears their undying loyalty to each other when they are down on their luck, but quickly are at each other's throats whenever times are good.

This film has it all: a gripping story, beautiful cinematography, the sex appeal of Mr. Mifune and Miss Uehara, flashes of laugh-out-loud humor, hair-raising narrow escapes, swordplay, hidden treasure ... what more could you want? "The Hidden Fortress" is recommended very, very highly for a general audience.
